Donating blood in Barcelona

Like in all other countries, blood donation in Spain is needed to help support medical treatments such as blood transfusions, emergency treatment and surgeries for their citizens. Giving blood in Barcelona is a lot easier than you may think and the the city council is always grateful for donations. ShBarcelona has put together some information about blood donation in Barcelona.

The Banc de Sang i Texts is Catalonia’s public blood donation organisation. They are responsible for not only blood donation but also tissue donation, cord blood and human milk donation.

Where can I donate blood?

The Banc de Sang i Teixits has several blood collection points located throughout Barcelona and Catalonia, including 16 fixed centres found in the major hospitals of Catalonia and 17 mobile donation centres that visit over 80 towns and cities across Catalonia each week. Hospital Universitari Call d’Hebron: Passeig Vall d’Hebron 119 – 129. 93 274 90 25. Opening times from Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 8:00 pm and from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm on Saturdays and bank holidays. Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau: Sant Antoni Maria Claret, 167. Pavelló del convent, 11. Recommended street Access Pare Claret (entre l’Església i l’Òptica Universitària). 93 553 75 91. Opening times from Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 8:00 pm and from 09:00 am to 2:00 pm and from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Saturdays and bank holidays. Hospital Clínic: Villarroel, 170 Esc1 1r pis. 93 227 54 00 (ext. 20 90). Opening times from Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 8:00 pm and from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm on Saturdays and bank holidays.

What documents do I need to bring?

If it is your first time donating, you should bring an identity card. This could be a DNI, NIE, passport or driving license. If you are already registered with the blood bank, you can bring your donor card or an identity card with your first name and surname on it.

Can UK Expats donate in Spain?

Anyone who has lived in the UK between 1980 and 1996 will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. However, each region may have different rules about donation. It’s best to call up your nearest blood bank or drop in and speak to a professional. There are certain regulations with blood donation in Barcelona. If you have any doubt about whether or not you are eligible to donate, call the donation helpline on 93 557 35 00. Alternatively, visit the blood donation organisation’s FAQ page where you can find out whether or not you can give blood.
