How to join a choir in Barcelona

Written by Christine

One of the greatest advantages of living in a vibrant and cultural city like Barcelona is that it is easy to find something for everyone when it comes to interests and hobbies. Whether you’re a fitness freak, an art lover, or a techie, there are definitely ways for you to meet up with like-minded individuals to indulge in your favorite activity. If you like to sing, then you’re in luck as there are several choirs in Barcelona that you can join to meet new people and belt out some tunes. Here are just some of the options for joining a choir in Barcelona in a fun and exciting environment.

The Barcelona English Choir is open to anyone who enjoys singing and has a passion for music in a fun and informal atmosphere. No audition is necessary and you don’t even need to know how to read music! The purpose of the choir is to simply get together and sing while exploring different styles of music like jazz, pop, rock, blues, and more. The Barcelona English Choir meets for weekly sessions to practice and also takes part in public performances, events, and even flash mobs! You can sign up for the choir online, as well as view the schedule for practices and sessions. Hurry though, as there is currently a waiting list for open spots in the choir due to popularity!

UPF Choir

For those who have a music background or more training in music and performance, you might find that the UPF Choir might be a better fit for you. This choir is free to join but you must submit an application and audition as this choir offers its members more serious training both in music, vocals, and performance techniques. The UPF Choir is free but to be a member you must commit to attending 75% of rehearsals throughout the year, as well as events and performances. The choir runs from the end of September through June and meets on Wednesday nights from 7 to 10 PM. Check out their website or stop by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra for more information on how to join.

Church choirs

If you’re comfortable enough singing in Spanish or Catalan, then you could consider joining a church choir. These choirs are different than the previously mentioned ones for several reasons, mainly because the style of music is that of the church and not typically rock or jazz. Also, some churches may ask that you be a member of the church in order to be a part of the choir. This option works best for those who are looking not only to be part of a choir but to become part of a religious community as well.
