Vipassana meditation is an ancient practice that has been used in India for thousands of years. Even though this practice has been used over the ages, the Vipassana movement itself didn’t begin until the 1950s in Burma. The movement was to spread the use of Vipassana as a way to deal with modern Western problems and everyday ailments. At the core of Vipassana meditation is the search for insight, or mindfulness, something that is becoming more and more popular in today’s world. It is believed that through mindfulness one can inspect their own life and be more aware of himself and the world around him.

How to practice Vipassana

Vipassana meditation is currently used all over the world but is the primary meditation used in Buddhism in Southeast Asia. To practice Vipassana you need to find a quiet and peaceful place where you will be undisturbed. Once you are sitting on the ground, you need to focus on your breathing, which is one of the most important elements of Vipassana. You will become mindful of your breathing, and you should try to maintain a steady rhythm, focusing on the rising and falling of the abdomen. While you are in this peaceful state you should start to be mindful of the sensations that you are experiencing during this time: the smells, the sounds, the feelings. The goal is to try to maintain this state without any other outside thoughts, focusing only on how you are experiencing the world during the meditation.

  • Namaste,

Thanks you for sharing !! It’s nice to write an article, but it’s better to know the subject your write on…

I would have few comment to do … The technique of Vipasana is not based on focusing on the breath, and there no point to maintain a steady rhythm.
Vipasana means “to see things as they are”. It’s about observing, not controlling.

The best way to learn Vipasana is to go in a center and do a 10 days course.

I wish you’ll give yourself the opportunity to discover Vipasana.
