The New York Times pictures arrive in Barcelona

Written by Adriana

Attention to all photography lovers! From the 28th of September until the 2nd of December you can visit the exhibition “The New York Times Magazine. Photographs” at the Palau Robert in Barcelona. There, they show the work of 35 consolidated photographers such as Nan Goldin, Annie Leibovitz, Lee Friedlander, Philip Lorca diCorcia or Jeff Koons. The exhibition invites us to reflect on the nature of the image through over 130 stunning snapshots representing the 30-year history of this publication, a reference for contemporary photography. The current moment of worldwide crisis is affecting specially all newspapers and magazines, and that adds value to an exhibition-witness of the most splendid period of the genre. Although some of the national and international magazines and newspapers are decreasing their quality and lowing their budget, the creativity of the exhibited oeuvres is encouraging and it will awake the more pessimistic consciences.

The curators of this tour in images are the editor of The New York Times Magazine (Kathy Ryan), and Lesley A. Martin and has been organized by the Aperture Foundation, an institution known worldwide in the field of photography, and Canopia, company, its representative in Spain. In the exhibition this famous publication offers a unique opportunity to know the creative processes of the magazine through contact sheets, videos, personal correspondence and originals magazines. In “The New York Times Magazine. Photographs” the photography disciplines are varied and range from photojournalism to fashion reports of great designers, to portraits of Hollywood celebrities, or to the Obama campaign conceptual photography. They all involve a deep review of photographic language evolution, as well as its historical- journalistic context.

If you want to enjoy the photographs beyond the walls of the Palau Robert, and to keep them in your memory (or on the shelves of your house) you can purchase the book named after this exhibition, published by Blume. This journalistic and artistic itinerary will surprise you for sure!
