And although the beaches can be extremely crowded in summer, which is inevitable as Barcelona is one of the busiest cities in Spain with many visitors all year round, one thing is sure.

The beaches of Barcelona have many services, they are clean and can be easily reached from other areas of Barcelona. Today, this article by ShBarcelona will tell you more about the beaches on Barcelona’s coast.

San Sebastià beach

First of all there is San Sebastià Beach, the oldest beach in Barcelona. You will see that it is also one of the largest beaches on Barcelona’s coast, and it is home to a few important sports clubs in Barcelona.

Together with Bogatell Beach, Sant Sebastià Beach is actually one of the most popular beaches, and especially adults love it. There is a separated area for nudists, just like at Mar Bella Beach.

Sant Sebastià Beach has a very convenient service, where volunteers help people with reduced mobility get onto the beach and into the water, by assisting them with the amphibious chair. And as a result everyone can enjoy the beach and the sea here!

Therefore, Sant Sebastià Beach is one of the most interesting locations for seniors, who are looking for tranquillity and good quality services.

Think of kiosks for refreshments or ice cream, the possibility to rent an umbrella, locker or lounger, exercising at well equipped sports areas, using the shower or public toilet, as well as the availability of parking areas, nearby public transport and many restaurants.

Barceloneta beach

Next is Barceloneta Beach. This beach is nearest to the city centre, and it can be easily accessed by public transport. Some bus lines almost drop you off with your feet right in the sand, making it the favourite beach for many tourists and young people.

This beach has several sports and leisure facilities, such as volleyball courts, children’s play areas, a table tennis and fitness area and a biblio-playa or beach library. There are also lockers for your valuables, umbrellas, sun loungers and bicycles for rent, and you can use the public showers and toilets.

Somorrostro beach

Our next beach is Somorrostro Beach. This beach has recently been renamed to pay tribute to the slums of Somorrostro, which were demolished for Franco’s visit to Barcelona in 1966, after having existed for over a hundred years.

Somorrostro Beach is also centrally located and well connected by public transport. Many young people and people from abroad prefer this beach. It has a fitness area, volleyball courts, showers and public toilets.

Nova Icària beach

The next beach is also frequently visited by both visitors and locals, and this is Nova Icària Beach. Due to its location in front of Port Olympic, the beach has ample sports areas with volleyball fields, ping-pong tables and a games area.

There is also a service with volunteers here, to help people with disabilities or reduced mobility to get onto the beach and into the water.

Bogatell beach

Both Bogatell Beach and Sant Sebastià Beach are favourite with adults and elderly people, as it has kiosks, showers and toilets, a sun lounger and umbrella rental service and sports areas.

Mar Bella beach

Mar Bella Beach is mostly visited by young people, as it has many sports facilities, such as a volleyball and basketball court and ping-pong tables.

Mar Bella Beach has a water sports centre from where many aquatic activities can be carried out. There is also a children’s play area, and during the summer months, books can be rented from the beach library.

Nova Mar Bella beach

Nova Mar Bella Beach is a more quiet beach with younger visitors, many of them are female or locals.

Llevant beach

The last beach to discuss is Llevant Beach. You will find this beach next to Nova Mar Bella Beach, and as it is a little further away from the city centre, this is one of the more relaxed beaches in Barcelona.

It also has a separate area in summer for dog owners who want to visit the beach with their beloved pet.
