Barcelona’s most beautiful churches

Barcelona was founded in deeply religious roots, which is evidenced by the number of churches that can be found around the city. Here are some of the most beautiful ones.

Sagrada Família

The single most visited monument in Barcelona, La Sagrada Famìlia is a work created by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Combining the styles of Art Noveau and Gothic, La Sagrada Família is an awe-inspiring church with a mesmerizing façade, gigantic columns, and gorgeous stained glass windows. La Sagrada Família was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO, despite the church not being one hundred percent complete.

Catedral de Barcelona or Santa Eulalia’s Cathedral

The Cathedral is a tall building, about 90 meters high and 40 meters wide. Inside there are three naves, a large organ, various interior chapels and the altar. There is a gorgeous choir in the center of the main chapel with carved stalls, whose enclosure is ornamented with reliefs telling the story of Santa Eulalia. On the underground floor, visitors can see Santa Eulalia’s sarcophagus.

Outside, there is a cloister with large green plants and a beautiful fountain. There are also thirteen geese representing Santa Eulalia’s age when she was martyrized, and a statue of Sant Jordi killing a dragon.

Santa Eulalia’s Cathedral is located at Pla de la Seu, inside the Gothic neighborhood.

Santa Maria del Mar

Based on a design created by architects Ramon Despuig and Berenger de Montagut, the church of Santa Maria del Mar was built between the years of 1329 and 1383. This Gothic-style church has a collection of impressive, tall pillars, beautiful stained glass windows, and decorated chandeliers.

Santa Mria del Mar is located at Plaça de Santa Maria, 1.

Sant Pau del Camp

A former Benedictine monastery that was demolished and rebuilt a number of times during past centuries. It is one of the most well-conserved Romanesque buildings in the city, declared Bien de Interés Cultural in the year of 1879.

Sant Pau del Camp is located at Carrer de Sant Pau, 101, in the neighborhood or Raval.

Templo Expiatorio del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús

Located in the Tibidabo mountain, next to the famous Tibidabo amusement park, Templo Expiatorio del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is a church that was designed by architect Enric Sagnier I Villavecchia. The building presents traces of Neo-Gothic style, as well as of Catalan Modernism. The small but beautiful church has a collection of colorful stained glass, and impressively ornated walls and altar.
