The show
Anti-Karaoke is a classic in Barcelona’s alternative parties scene. With its nearly 10 years of existence and a loyal group of fans and supporters, the show is more a rock concert than a classic karaoke show. Hosted by the charismatic Rachel Arieff, that also performs during the show, in Anti-Karaoke you will be able to choose from a very long list of classic and modern rock, pop, metal, heavy, punk, old school rap, and alternative songs. You won’t find the cheesy pop songs (and they’re proud of it) and you can have a look at the catalogue on their Facebook page and even make requests. They’re all high quality versions, not poor MIDI renditions.
Another peculiar thing that makes the show different is that you won’t find the videos with the lyrics, like in traditional karaoke bars. You may read the lyrics from a photocopy in a music stand, but your focus should be on the audience, who will be devoted to you (no matter how you sing), which makes the whole show more like a real concert. There’s also some costumes and accessories, like wigs, glasses, hats…in case you want to accessorize your performance.
One of the main attractions of the show, besides the performers, is the host: Rachel Arieff. She introduces the songs and usually performs several times during the show. She describes herself as comedian, cabaret artist, flamenco student, and creator and mistress of ceremonies of Anti-Karaoke. She’s crazy, funny and the engine and spirit of the show. Rachel is currently hosting another show Flamencoguiri perdía, a combination of comedy, cabaret and her first efforts with flamenco music. As she phrases it: flamenco filtered through the warped mind of an American stand-up comic. Or rather, a new form of flamenco altogether: flamenguiri.
