Although it’s commonly known as the Conde de Godó Tournament, the official name is Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. Sometimes you will also find it as the ATP 500 of Barcelona. But, why is the reference made to the Count of Godó?

For this, we must go to the historical era in which Alfonso XIII reigned. During that time, three different Counts of Godó were met. The first was Ramón Godó Lallana, founder of the well-known newspaper “La Vanguardia”. Later on, his son arrives, Carlos Godó Valls, who in the year of 1935 presided over the Real Club Tenis de Barcelona. It was precise with this position that he decided in the year of 1953 to create the Conde de Godó Tournament.

After dying in the year of 1988, his son Javier Godó Muntañola is the one who takes the legacy. Today, it’s he who is present at the award ceremony of the tournament created by his father and who we will see in the final of the Conde de Godó Tournament 2022.
