Original version films in Barcelona

Written by Adriana

Cinema in Spain is traditionally dubbed, both in theaters and on TV. This means that, in general, Spanish people haven’t a tendency to watch original version subtitled films. Anyway, local audiences that refuse to give up and miss out on the actors’ performance from the dialogue in the original language are keeping alive cinemas with subtitled films on their schedules. If you are a foreigner and you are spending some time in Barcelona for work or studies, staying in one of ShBarcelona’s rental apartments, you can go to one of the cinemas that we suggest you below. An excellent way to improve your Spanish, if you require it, and enjoy an excellent movie premiere.

Cines Renoir Floridablanca: Renoir cinemas in Spain are the reference for people to watch subtitled movies. Its central location in the Eixample district near the Plaza Universitat, makes it one of the busiest theaters in Barcelona. Recently, Renoir Floridablanca has been affected by a closure threat, after Renoir Les Corts had to close down for lack of viewers and due to the financial crisis that affects the entire culture sector in Spain. At the moment this cinema is still open and showing the best original version films. C / Floridablanca 135.

Cines Verdi / Cines Verdi Park: both Cines Verdi (5 rooms) and the Verdi Park (4 rooms) are in Gracia just a few meters away from each other and they are programming auteur films in original version. Both cinema’s billboard usually go for alternative or independent movies outside the commercial offer, but they also show world premieres, classic directors cycles, short films, films for children, etc., and they encourage hiring rooms for private screenings. You can get the Amigos del Verdi card and get discounts and free tickets. Cines Verdi: C / Verdi 32. Verdi Park: C / Torrijos 49.

Yelmo Cines Icaria: this cinema is within the mall El Centre de la Vila Port Olímpic, quite far from the city center, but very close to the beach area ofBarcelona. In it you will find 15 rooms in which they show national and international movie premieres in the original version with subtitles in a more quiet environment. It also features 3D technology for watching movies with 3D sunglasses. C / Salvador Espriú, 61.

Filmoteca de Catalunya: after the new Filmoteca facilities in the central district of the Raval, this cinema has increased its audience and it keeps looking for an alternative offer to commercial cinema circuits. Thematic cinema cycles, short film sessions, a film archive, catalogs and even a library, Filmoteca has an extensive cinematographic and cultural offer, almost as extensive as its new facilities. And of course, all films are screened in original version with subtitles. Check out the full schedule on their website! Plaza Salvador Segui, 1-9.
