If you haven’t already tapped into the free activities and events on offer through Barcelona’s civic centres, then you’re in for a real treat. The city’s civic centres, which are network of around 50 community organisations coordinated through the Barcelona City Council, offer free cultural activities year-round including live music, film, story-telling and children’s activities. Outdoor cinema at the Sants Civic Centre
Throughout July, one way to enjoy the summer nights is to take in a movie at the outdoor cinema series thanks to the Sants Civic Centre. Screened on Thursdays at 10.00pm, all movies on show are free to attend. Coming up on 7 July is the 2013 film Tangerines (Spanish version), which is Zaza Urushadze’s work in telling the story of an Estonian man staying behind during the war in Abkhazia to harvest tangerines and care for a wounded fighter. On 14 July, enjoy the latest Woody Allen film with Irrational Man, a story about a tormented philosophy professor trying to find meaning in his life. And at the end of the month on 21 July, check out Steven Spielberg’s The Bridge of Spies (Spanish version) a thriller/biography about the Soviet Union capture of United States pilot Francis Gary Powers.
Storytelling at Matas i Ramis Civic Centre
Up until the middle of July, the Matas i Ramis Civic Centre in Horta is hosting storytelling sessions every Wednesday. The free shows, which are aimed for children or perhaps those young at heart, begin at seven o’clock in Placa Eivissa. On July 6, Pengim Penjam Titelles will present a lively and entertaining interactive puppet show. A week later on July 13, Adriana Segurado will arrive with a thrilling and fun-filled set of stories to tell. The storytelling at Matas i Ramis Civic Centre is a great activity for children or perhaps a fun experience for Catalan beginners.
Theatre at Borrell Civic Centre
Enjoy some laughs in the outdoors with the improv and theatre shows on offer at the Borrell Civic Centre in Sant Antoni in July. On Thursdays from 10.00pm, the first show on 7 July is inspired by the aesthetics of 70s police series such as Starsky and Hutch and Charlie’s Angels. On July 14, a musical theatre show will see a creative in a crisis and the audience involved with coming up with the solution. The last show of the month on July 21 will see a dual between improv artists with a jury selected from audience members.
