Barcelona’s boutique theatre: Sala Beckett

Sala Beckett
Written by Ana Petrusevski

Barcelona’s boutique theatre, Sala Beckett, has just recently made a move from the neighbourhood of Gràcia to Sant Marti. With them, they have brought a flavour for theatrical creation and experimentation that comes in the form of plays you can watch and courses you can partake in. They are keen on building their creative community and offer a warm welcome to anyone interested in contemporary theatre. This is a meeting place for playwrights, directors, actors and the general public.

You’ll see through their programming that they have a special emphasis on new forms of dramatic writing and also a true respect for the art form they tout.

Since 2011 Sala Beckett / Obrador Internacional de Dramatúrgia has existed as a Foundation recognised by the Catalan Government. They have a board of trustees comprised of twelve playwrights. They have been established as a theatre since 1989.

Some of the upcoming workshops that might tickle the fancy of the actor/playwright in you:

Outline Your Plot with Pere Riera

“A play is a story told using dramaturgical techniques. But, above all, it is a story.” Pere will focus on the playwright and their approach to creating a good story; a story that arouses creative interest. In this course you will be putting into practice resources that can help you construct a story and to create its plot outline; this will be the initial and essential step to creating your theatrical text.

From Body to Paper, from Paper to Body with Gabriela Izcovich

The goal of this seminar is to allow its students to write, act and direct their own texts. The workshop will consist of an intensive training session where the areas of writing and acting will be explored together. The day will start off with acting exercises to build awareness of stage textuality and will continue on to cover theatrical writing. The aim of this seminar is to encourage an awareness of theatrical writing and acting and to motivate the spirit of self-management.

“From body to paper, from paper to body, from action to writing, from writing to action”. Gabriela Izcovich

Sala Beckett is a small theatre with a big presence, you can enjoy regular shows, workshops or meetings or take part in international courses.

The first step is to pay them a visit.
