Mailuna’s Spa Cafe in Raval

Written by Alise

As a broke English teacher, I had never entered Mailuna because I thought that it was a just spa. Eyeing its serene-looking lobby from the sidewalk, with little hope I longed for the one day that I could make use of its services. I was thus taken aback when some friends and I happened to be strolling by it one afternoon, and one of them suggested we go inside.

Turns out Mailuna’s café is open to the public, not only those who have come for a spa session.

The Café

Located in the bustling heart of Raval, this quiet locale offers a peaceful reprieve from the noise, dirt, and crowds that tend to characterize the surrounding neighborhood. With extremely high ceilings and a plethora of natural light, Mailuna has quite the airy feel that is grounded by the exposed textured walls. The space even offers an outdoor patio with a soothing fountain and green vegetation to add touches of nature.

I quickly found out that in addition to the different pastries, crepes, salads, and desserts on the menu, Mailuna also serves an extensive variety of teas and herbal infusions. Uniquely, instead of listing the teas on a paper menu, the server brings to you a container of color-coordinated test tubes filled with the tea leaves so that you can smell them to help inform your decision.

And, as my friend mentioned, you don’t have to be a client of the spa to enjoy the café.

Other Services

However, if you are willing to drop a few more euros, you can go upstairs to the spa section of Mailuna to receive, amongst other treatments, a variety of types of massages (including one cutely named after my hometown, “Californiano,”) and facials. These are actually quite reasonably priced, with half-hour sessions hovering around 29 euro and hour-long sessions about 45 euro. They also offer other services such as Reiki, homeopathic/naturopathic medicine, and even therapy.

Finally, at the entrance of Mailuna are lots of books and other items for sale regarding healthy eating, relaxation, and spirituality.

Whether you’re looking for a more relaxing type of café, a tranquil retreat from the busy city, or luxurious spa services, Mailuna is worth checking out.

The space is located at Carrer Valldonzella 48, near Universitat metro (red line 1 or purple line 2).
