It is difficult to find a single decorative or design element that is characteristic of a specific place, but there are some characteristics related to interior design that represent the identity of a region or community. In the case of Catalonia, some of the style characteristics originate from Catalan farmhouses, or any house located in a rural environment. You will discover a series of very interesting architectural elements. The first element are its floors. They are generally made of baked clay, or, as it is also called, Catalan tuff. This typical tiled floor brings coolness in summer, and it is warm and welcoming in winter. Despite its rural look and its simplicity, it is of a timeless charm. It is usually combined with large carpets, mostly with ethnic motifs or from natural materials and fibres, such as bamboo, esparto grass or jute. Furniture is generally made of solid wood, in dark and natural colours. Textiles are also made of natural fabrics, such as linen or cotton, also mainly in neutral colours. The ceilings are many times of the Catalan volta type, and they are a characteristic of the regional architecture. They give the room an authentic, rural, but at the same time stylish and remarkable, atmosphere.

There is also the modernist style. It is being applied to many renovations and you will often find it mixed with other interior design styles. The key feature of this style is mosaic floors, which are handcrafted floors with different designs. They give a building or home a very unique look. Mosaic floors are now being created with new materials, but there are companies dedicated to the restoration and maintenance of old ones, as they still exist in hundreds of buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, especially in Barcelona. In addition to the aforementioned decorative elements, stained-glass windows and stained-glass doors are also a classic decorative element of modernism, and you can discover them in many buildings, especially in more impressive neighbourhoods, like Eixample. In short, the modernist style is an elegant and distinguished style, destined to decorate the homes of the more wealthy and the former Catalan bourgeoisie in Barcelona. Despite the fact that there is not one typical Catalan decorative or interior design element, you can see that there are characteristic styles of Catalan interior design.
