Carnival in Barcelona

Written by Daniella

Carnival is one of the most fun events on the calendar. Taking care of your disguise has always required a great sense of humor, creativity and desire. So collecting the clothes or masks for your dress or uniform, or making them yourself,  brings a lot of distraction and fun during the short days of the year. With carnival, there are parades and music everywhere, and children and young people in disguise appear in the streets on the way to school or to college. At night, the not so young also disguise themselves for the carnival party and they also have fun on the weekend. Today ShBarcelona tells you all about Carnival 2019 in Barcelona.

Carnival is celebrated before the Christian Lent that begins on Ash Wednesday, and takes place between the months of February and March. It has variable dates depending on the year. Typically, it starts on Thursday and ends on the following Tuesday. The most traditional acts are costumes, parades, dances and music and, in other areas of Spain chirigotas (satirical folksongs) are displayed with a lot of irony on current issues. The hallmark of this celebration is debauchery and fun to counteract the sacrifices that will take place during Lent, a time of recollection, purification and enlightenment. In the early days of celebrating Carnival, the costumes were always accompanied by masks, in order to preserve the identity of the participants by a certain modesty or shame. Currently this habit has been lost and people who disguise themselves do it bare-faced.

Many of you will be contemplating what is the best disguise this Carnival. Therefore, ShBarcelona will give you some perfect ideas to disguise this year. First of all, if you are a fan of horror movies, you can choose to disguise yourself as a demon nun, like in “La Monja” by director Corin Hardy. You can also choose a costume, that will probably cause a stir this year: Donald Trump. Another alternative is to disguise yourself as one of the leading characters of Game of Thrones, a very popular series. Finally, if you plan to disguise yourself as a complete family, you can borrow the looks and costumes from The Incredibles.

If there is one place where Carnival is celebrated in a very intense way in Barcelona, it is at the markets of Barcelona. This year, between February 28th and March 5th, all markets in the Catalan capital will organize a series of events, to enjoy this celebration and have a bite to eat. As happens every year, one of the municipal markets of the Ciudad Condal will kick off, where the Carnival King and his ambassadors will parade from around 10:30 am and where you can dance, have breakfast based on eggs, sausages, tortillas and pork rinds and choose the best decorated market stall, which can lead to the traditional Pebrot d’or award. After this happening, activities and costumes can be found at the rest of the city’s markets.

What are you going to do for Carnival? What costume will you be wearing?
