Types of Fireplaces to Warm and Decorate Your Home

Written by Laura

In Barcelona, it’s not too common to find fireplaces in people’s homes, mostly due to the calm Mediterranean climate that people in the Ciudad Condal get to enjoy. However, that doesn’t mean you need to deny yourself the comfort of a fireplace, which can be both a source of warmth for your home as well as an opportunity for decoration that is highly valued by interior designers and architects all over the world. Putting a traditional fireplace in your house is no easy task, especially if you live on a property with neighbors, as installing all the different elements can sometimes be incompatible with the rest of the building. There are other options, however, for spreading heat through your home that are similar to this traditional kind of fireplace that you may find more to your liking. Today in this article from ShBarcelona, we’ll be talking about different types of fireplaces to decorate and heat your home.

Fireplaces can be a great source of heat for your home beyond just a traditional heating system such as a radiator or heating ducts, as they help to not only provide heat, but spread it through your whole home. Over time, fireplaces have converted into an object of adoration for many people, with many homeowners dreaming of having a cozy place to curl up in front of on cold days. However, in large cities like Barcelona with its Mediterranean climate and mild winters, home builders generally opt not to include chimneys and fireplaces in most homes. Instead, they limit them to larger spaces such as isolated homes or family estates. However, some interior designers still hold tight to the construction concept of these additions, not just for their heating function but also for the aesthetic quality they bring to a home. It is here that some disagreement comes up over what is better, between electric fireplaces and ethanol ones. The main element of a classic fireplace is a chimney that extends up and out of the house for fumes and smoke from the burning wood to escape.

Electric fireplaces are electronic apparatuses that generate hot air and simulate a classic burning fireplace via a screen. There are a variety of models of these electric fireplaces, from insertable models that present a great resemblance to traditional fireplaces and others that are more portable and convenient. These need to be plugged into an outlet since they are electric, and obviously do not need to be connected to a chimney since they are not actually producing fumes that need to be released from the space. On the other hand, ethanol fireplaces use a flammable liquid that produces flames but does not generate smoke that therefore requires a chimney. The appearance of flames in this fireplace can create a more real sense of warmth than an electric version, but does not have the same power as a classic fireplace connected to a chimney. There are a variety of different models that are highly functional as well as a great form of decoration. There are large, fitted models that emulate the traditional versions and also serve as a piece beautiful decor. In addition, you can find tabletop models as well as portable options that allow you to move this heat source into different rooms.

What do you think of the new fireplace models that are on the market?
