Where to go to relax in Sant-Montjuïc

Written by Thompson Crowley

Barcelona is a fun and exciting place to be; there’s so much going on all the time! Every part of the city has its own distinct character, full of culture and with many intriguing events running throughout the year. But sometimes it can get very busy, and it all becomes a little overwhelming; especially with the heat. Sometimes you just need to escape the manic urban bustle and find yourself a place of retreat for a while.

Well, not to worry, as well as being a vibrant and eventful place, Barcelona also has some great spots of calm for you to relax in.

Sant-Montjuïc is one of the greener districts in Barcelona. It is home to the Montjuïc hill, as well as several other parks and gardens. It’s the perfect place to escape to, being as it is so close to the city center, yet retreating to one of these green spaces will make you feel far, far away.

Montjuïc is a large hill which sits overlooking the harbor, to the southwest of the city. It can be accessed from a variety of locations, but the main entrance is at Av. de la Reina Maria Cristina, close to Plaça Espanya. It is home to the Castle of Montjuïc, as well as many colorful steps, fountains and gardens. A great effort has been taken to keep the area remaining green, with man-made constructions at a minimum. So, it’s the perfect place to retreat to after visiting one of the many nearby museums. Here, you can be surrounded by nature and completely forget about the city. There are many seating areas throughout the hill, as well as viewpoints looking out over the surrounding landscape.

Parque de la Espanya Industrial is located on Calle Muntadas, next to the Sants train station. It is a quiet retreat in the middle of the city, perfect for families and friends. The park features many sculptures, as well as a large, tranquil boating lake which attracts many different birds. The area used to be home to a vast textile mill, remnants of which can still be seen; fortunately, now the government has deemed it as a permanent green space.

Jardins de les Tres Xemeneies

Jardins de les Tres Xemeneies is located on Av. del Parallel. It is another industrial site, once the home of a power station, now transformed into a green space. There is a small pond, several paved squares, and a skate park within its boundaries. The park plays host to graffiti competitions throughout the year, evidence of which can be seen on the various walls.
