A Night in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter

Written by Miguel

The beauty and charm of the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona is also present when it comes to its nightlife. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, terraces with great views and places that seem to change entirely as soon as the sun sets and the moon rises – so let us guide you through the night in one of Barcelona’s most fascinating neighbourhoods.

Our first stop is Las Ramblas – these famous streets never close, so at night they continue to attract plenty of tourists and locals – some just passing by, others enjoying the fine leisure and entertainment on offer. Here we can choose one of the many bars and have a drink while talking and watching people walk by. If you’re looking for dinner instead, pick other streets in the quarter, since the ones in Las Ramblas tend to be more expensive and have less quality.

From there, we will move to Plaza Real, the heart of the city’s nightlife. We can either sit on one of the terraces, enjoying the beautiful views on offer, or follow the music and go dancing – when it comes to clubs in the square, we recommend Sidecar or Jamboree.

The Gothic Quarter at night

The beautiful streets of the quarter remain unaltered during the night. Some may seem a little dark, which only adds mystique to its gothic architecture. As we walk further into the neighbourhood, we walk past Calle Escudellers, famous for its bars and nightclubs, where modernity and tradition walk (or dance) hand in hand.

Moving on, Calle Ample can lead us to several squares. One of them, Plaza Sant Jaume, is lit up at night, emphasizing its two central buildings – the City Council and the Government Palace.

Due to the number of tourists in the area, some of the stores in the square have extended opening hours and close quite late, which presents us with a great opportunity for some relaxed late-night shopping.

Looking around, we’ll see a traditional bocadillos place where we can have the best tidbits in town. If we’re really hungry, though, we’ll take a walk to Calle Ferran, which has a good and diverse offer when it comes to restaurants.

Something impressive about the Gothic Quarter at night is number and variety of buildings from different eras that you can see completely lit up. From the palaces in Plaza del Rei (another great place to spend the night) to the Cathedral, including the La Mercè Basilica and a good part of the city walls, the lights give the neighbourhood a true atmosphere of awe and wonder.

We hope this is a good guide for going out with your friends in the Gothic Quarter. If you’re interested, there are also night tours of the neighbourhood that you can take – a different and interesting way to see Barcelona and learn about its history of culture.
