What you should wear in Barcelona this winter?

Barcelona in the winter is generally cold. Not as cold as Scandinavia or northern France, but cold. Even though temperatures rarely fall below zero, it can be windy, and when it rains it can feel colder still. Having  said that, when the sun appears, it can be very pleasant to sit on beach or in the terrazas. If adequately clad, of course.

Outside of Barcelona, in the mountainous areas, expect proper thick snow, but in the city snow is a rather rare sight. Keeping that in mind, this is what we recommend wearing during the winter months:

Here are some tips on what you will need to bring if you want to be comfy and warm (but not too hot) during your stay in Barcelona in the winter.

As previously mentioned, it rarely gets to the point of freezing in so a medium weight coat should be adequate. To this base add various layers that can be applied and peeled off when necessary and you should be fine throughout your stay. A hoodie or sweater and a light sweater or thick t-shirt should do it. Obviously, this all depends on whether you tend to feel the cold more than others and what your plan is once you get to Barcelona.

Even when it’s mild and sunny, be aware that if you want to sit outside, you will begin to feel the cold pretty soon. If you end up wandering around the city all day and into the evening, then, of course, it’s going to get cooler quite rapidly. Once the sun goes down the temperature drops noticeably, so having a couple of layers with you is sensible.

Good shops around Barcelona

From late November/earlyDecember onwards it’s likely that you will need a scarf and something to keep your head warm.

Of course, you can buy any of these items locally upon your arrival, there are high-street brands on every corner in the shopping areas, and in fact, as both Zara and Mango are Spanish, the prices will be cheaper.

Another good shop, where you could buy cheap hoodies and outdoor gear – if you don’t mind looking like an outdoor enthusiast –, is Decathlon. The French store sells fitness and outdoor clothing, along with camping gear and sports equipment at great prices.

It is also a good idea to bring an umbrella (or you can wait until it start pouring down and buy one locally) or a waterproof layer.

For your legs, you’ll want jeans or similar, thick leggings or tights. If you are crazy enough to walk around barelegged for the sake of fashion, then you probably won’t be reading this article anyway.

For your feet either a pair of boots or a pair of sneakers/trainers is the best idea, as you’ll want to do plenty of sightseeing once you get here and don’t want to be disabled by ill-chosen footwear.
