These days, stress is accepted as a normal part of our lives. When we feel stressed, the nervous system releases stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline into our bodies which produce the “flight or flight” response. While this can save your life in a dangerous situation, a constant stream of daily stresses also causes the same reaction and this can have a negative effect on our health and well-being. We are so busy rushing around trying to get a million things done that we rarely stop and take some time for ourselves. Finding ways to relax and unwind can be incredibly helpful when it comes to dealing with the stresses of daily life. This can be anything from a long walk in the park to reading a good book or an evening with friends. Here are a few great ways to de-stress that can fit into your daily routine and will leave you feeling calmer:

Exercise is the key
It is widely accepted that exercise is one of the best ways to relieve stress. When we exercise, our bodies release endorphins which make us feel happy and relaxed. Given our busy schedules, finding the time to workout can seem almost impossible but fear not, you don’t have to dedicate hours a day to exercise, a mere twenty minutes a day is all that is needed to feel the benefits. Anything which gets the body moving be it running, cycling, swimming or yoga is great. Taking a yoga class can be a particularly good way to switch off and unwind and there are many yoga studios in Barcelona where you can give it a go.
So next time you are feeling low, why not throw on your trainers and go for a jog around Parc de la Ciutadella? You are guaranteed to feel better!
Do more of what makes you happy
So often we feel guilty about taking some time out or spending money on treating ourselves but it can, in fact, do us the world of good. Make some time after work or at the weekend to do something which you truly enjoy. This could be a day at the beach, a massage, an expensive dinner or a night out with friends. Rewarding ourselves for all the time and effort we put into work, family and other commitments should be nothing to feel bad about.
Get some fresh air
When it feels like stress is getting on top of you, it can be incredibly helpful to go outside and get some fresh air. Even if you don’t feel like you have time, taking ten minutes to step outside and go for a short walk can have a big impact. Taking a step back from the stressful situation can help you gain some perspective. What’s more, anywhere you step out in Barcelona is likely to be beautiful and you’ll get some vitamin D too!
As the saying goes ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’. So often we bottle up our feelings and emotions which only ends up making us feel even more stressed and anxious. Next time you are worrying about something, no matter how big or small, speak to a friend, colleague or family member to get some advice and gain some perspective on the issue. You’ll feel a lot lighter afterwards!
These days we are all glued to our phones and computers so switching off from technology from time to time can be a good idea. Doing something creative such as drawing, walking around the city taking pictures or trying a dance class can provide the perfect distraction from our stresses – and can be really fun too!
