Written by James

Are you planning on staying or living in Barcelona for a while? If so you may need to find part-time or full-time work as a way to make some money during your time in the city. Whether you are working to pay for one of the many available Barcelona apartments for rent, or just some extra spending cash, there are some important things you should know before you go out and try to get a job. Knowing these facts can and will help make your job search in Barcelona that much easier.

Basic facts

barcelona jobs- teaching englishWhen planning to work in Barcelona, there are a few important things that you need to have. If you are a resident from within the European Union you will need to obtain your Número de Identidad de Extranjeros (NIE) and a social security number before you can begin working in Barcelona. If you are a resident outside of the European Union you will need to obtain a work visa, even if you only plan on working on a temporary basis. Unfortunately it can be difficult to obtain a work visa but do not be deterred, with work and persistence you can receive a work visa. Another important detail to remember is that, though English is a widely accepted language and is often looked for by employers, it is likely possible for employers to require knowledge of Castilian and/or Catalan. It is good to keep in mind that salaries in Barcelona tend to be lower than the rest of the Western European countries, so be willing to be flexible with your salary.

Available Jobs

Another popular job for temporary residents of Barcelona is au pairing. An au pair is essentially like a live in nanny. Au pairs live with a family and are in charge of child care and house work, which can include cooking for the children. Au pairing is a popular job among students as it provides them with a constant and safe place to live, with good pay and flexible hours allowing the students the chance to explore and experience the city.

Finding a job in Barcelona can be as easy or as difficult as finding a job anywhere, but by following these helpful tips and knowing what you are looking for, the job hunting process does not need to be any more difficult. Though knowing only English will not hinder your job search, learning Castilian and/or Catalan can be beneficial.  You may not get a job right away, but keep your spirits up and keep trying. Research available jobs in the area beforehand to find one that is suitable for you. Having the chance to work in a different country can be a great learning experience, and with the money you earn from your job you could have a beautiful luxury Barcelona apartment. Following these tips will help you in your search for a job in Barcelona.
