Best Cinema in the open air at Sala Montjuic 2013

Barcelona Cinema Sala Montjuic
Written by Adriana

For the eleventh consecutive year Sala Montjuïc is screening, between June the 30th and August the 7th, recently released movies, great classic films and short films, while becoming a luxury stage for groups and singers of jazz, flamenco, bossa nova and other music styles. What differentiates this cinema from others in Barcelona is that there you will enjoy the summer breeze blowing at the Montjuïc castle moat while sitting on the lawn in front of the screen and enjoying the performances or outdoor screenings. Is there anything better to do when the summer heat don’t let you to go out even when the sun sets?

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8.30pm for the low price of 6 €, you can put your tablecloth, mat or lounge chair (for rent at 3 €) and attend a  music performance (starting at 8.45pm), followed by a selection of short films and a subtitled movie (from 10pm) while you eat the picnic that you and your friend or partner have prepared. It is a highly recommended plan from ShBarcelona’s blog, very common among the locals and it should be for you too if you are spending some time in the city. Getting there, Montjuïc Castle is a bit away from the city center, won’t be an excuse for lazy people as the Barcelona City Council has implemented a special bus service which goes up and down to Montjuïc Castle from Plaza España, where you can easily arrive from any point in the city by Metro, bus or rail.

So, what can you see specifically in the Sala Montjuïc this summer? From today, and until the place would be closed you will see:

  • Movies like “The Irish” (John Michael McDonagh, 2011), “Habemus Papam” (Nanni Moretti, 2011), “Nader and Simin, A Separation” (Asghar Farhadi, 2011), the successful Wes Anderson’s film, “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012), Billy Wilder’s classic movie “What happened between my father and your mother” (1972), “Source Code”(Duncan Jones, 2011), “Professor Lazhar” (Philippe Falardeau, 2011),”Citizen Kane“, another Orson Welles’ classic movie (1941), “Donnie Darko” (Richard Kelly, 2001), and a final projection yet to discover for the Sala Montjuïc closure. • Concerts like: Clara Luna Quartet (jazz), Swingapur (jazz), Joan Vidal Sextet (jazz), Tenderete (contemporary flamenco), Anna Herrero (Bossa Nova/Jazz) and Venancio y los Jóvenes de Antaño (Cuban music), El Colectivo with Marcel·li Bayer (jazz), Leslie Helpertand with Albert Vila Quartet at The Music of Billie Holiday (jazz), Hop’s Trio (swing/jazz), Chino & The Big Bet (blues/swing).
