Best cafes for laptops in Barcelona – the Gothic Quarter

If you are working remotely away from your short-term rental or just want to get online to update Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Ello, or whatever other site du jour is currently taking the social networking world by storm, then there are a wealth of places for you to choose from where you can plug in and suck up a bit of free broadband Wi-Fi. However, not all internet providing cafes are created equally.

If you are looking for somewhere a little more relaxing and conducive to quiet than the local Starbucks, then the following locations are on our current list, as they offer that little bit more for the discerning remote worker or laptop addict.

La Clandestina

Baixada Viladecols, 2  08002
Gothic Quarter

La Clandestina is a stunning little teteria or teashop hidden away in El Gotico with a very attractive interior and a good range of drinks both hot and cold. You can disappear in here for hours.

Besides a great range of teas and internet, they also have cakes, snacks, cookies, juices, lassis and hookah pipes. And live music sometimes (although that seems to be courtesy of innovative buskers) if that’s not enough. There are plug sockets behind the bar on the left as you go in.

Bar Schilling

Calle Ferran 23  08001
Gothic Quarter

Marginally soul-less but attractive enough Barcelona stalwart located on calle Ferran (main street leading from La Rambla toward Laietana). Good in the mornings when croissants, sandwiches and internet are served. On the right-hand-side at the back (towards the toilets) a couple of the smaller tables will allow you to plug in and get online.

Letraferit

C/ Joaquín Costa, 43  08001
El Raval

Letraferit is a good spot for surfing el net in the fashionably down-at-heel El Raval on one of the most colourful streets. They serve cocktails, coffees, hot chocolates, snacks and a few good teas. And they have books too and (generally) dubious art on the walls.

The seats (although leather) are comfortable and make your buttocks feel at home. Sit at the front and take advantage of the big windows for people watching and reminding yourself that life exists beyond your computer.

Lilipep

Carrer del Pou de la Cadena, 8
El Borne

Lilipep is a thoroughly gorgeous and utterly enchanting little café in El Born that invites you to bury yourself inside it for a few hours. They serve breakfast and have a general menu available throughout the day. Drinks are available with soy or rice milk (when available) and there are plenty of options.

Really cozy and quaint spot suitable for losing hours in.

Buenas Migas

Branches of Buenas Migas – the focaccia café – are generally a good bet. The interiors are clean and spacious and they serve an assortment of focaccias along with salads, sandwiches, and cakes.

You are issued with a receipt when you pay for your goods and you need to log on to their website and your free access will only last a certain time, but the food is cheap and it’s often possible to find a quiet spot to work in unhindered by gabbling locals or squealing toddlers.
