Can Paixano, or La Xampanyeria as its known by the locals, is an authentic Barcelona institution and not easy to find. Keep your ears open for the sound of sangria soaked revelers and you will find the kind of shoulder-to-shoulder drinking experience only found in Spain. This former warehouse, with a literal sky full of jamón has some of the best and most inexpensive cava in the city. Grab a tasty chorizo and manchego bocadillo (small sandwich) to accompany your flute of sparkling wine.

A fascination with gin has taken over the city and Xix Bar (pronounced chicks), a popular a little spot in the Poble Sec neighborhood, will help you get your fix. There are over 50 different gins to choose from including a selection of home-infused concoctions such as chocolate, rhubarb or grapefruit. Purists aren’t forgotten, with an assortment of the classics also being served up.

This Góthico haunt always seems to be packed, either due to its size or the rambunctious crowd. It is a colorful hole-in-the-wall style bar with a lively atmosphere alongside some good music. The drinks served are as random as the garden chair furnishings; choose from the superb house made vermut or the hydro-miel, which is a blend of honey and some unspecified spirit. Keep an eye of out for musician Manu Chao, who is said to often pop along for a drink and a jam session with the locals.
