Where to Drink Like a Local in Barcelona

Barcelona is a city known for its vibrant nightlife and is chock full of great bars. However, as a major tourist destination most visitors tend to stick with the masses, not venturing much further than the hectic and often overpriced La Rambla. Here, we round up some of the best watering holes favored by locals that will make you feel like a real Catalonian.

Can Paixano

Carrer de la Reina Cristina, 7

Can Paixano, or La Xampanyeria as its known by the locals, is an authentic Barcelona institution and not easy to find. Keep your ears open for the sound of sangria soaked revelers and you will find the kind of shoulder-to-shoulder drinking experience only found in Spain. This former warehouse, with a literal sky full of jamón has some of the best and most inexpensive cava in the city. Grab a tasty chorizo and manchego bocadillo (small sandwich) to accompany your flute of sparkling wine.

Cat Bar

Carrer de la Bòria, 17

Craft beer enthusiasts and vegans alike will want to pay a visit to Born’s Cat Bar. This small artisan beer bar maintains a punk rock vibe, as it serves up microbrews sourced not only l
ocally but from all over Europe. Take in the quirky cat themed decor as you enjoy one of the city’s best vegan burgers alongside your beverage.

Casa Almirall

Carrer de Joaquãn Costa, 33

This cozy absinthe den maintains the same vibe (and decor) from when it opened back in 1860. The well preserved 19th century furnishings, mirrors and chandeliers combined with some art nouveau touches add to the bohemian ambiance. Savor a glass of the green fairy as you soak in the history of this Raval favorite.

Xix Bar

Carrer de Rocafort, 19

A fascination with gin has taken over the city and Xix Bar (pronounced chicks), a popular a little spot in the Poble Sec neighborhood, will help you get your fix. There are over 50 different gins to choose from including a selection of home-infused concoctions such as chocolate, rhubarb or grapefruit. Purists aren’t forgotten, with an assortment of the classics also being served up.

Bar Mariatchi

Carrer dels Còdols, 14

This Góthico haunt always seems to be packed, either due to its size or the rambunctious crowd. It is a colorful hole-in-the-wall style bar with a lively atmosphere alongside some good music. The drinks served are as random as the garden chair furnishings; choose from the superb house made vermut or the hydro-miel, which is a blend of honey and some unspecified spirit. Keep an eye of out for musician Manu Chao, who is said to often pop along for a drink and a jam session with the locals.
