Santa Lucía Christmas Fair begins at the end of November and has more than 270 stalls selling Christmas items (cribs and figurines, plants and trees, and handicrafts). This fair traditionally takes place on Avinguda de la Catedral, opposite of the Pla de la Seu in the Gothic neighbourhood.

The fair offers all the products you could possibly need to decorate your home for Christmas, and visiting this traditional fair feels magical. Excitement for the Christmas season can be felt everywhere.

According to tradition, in the eighteenth century young seamstresses from Catalan villages went around town singing songs on the day of Santa Llúcia. From that moment on, the girls were called “llucietes”.

At other times, a group of girls went door to door to sing their songs and collect alms. One of the girls represented St. Lucia and wore a wreath of flowers, and the others were her “cardinals”.

Dressmakers started meeting in Parque de la Ciutadella in Barcelona, where they organized a party, and this is how the Fira de Santa Llúcia originally began.

Since 1786 the Christmas fair has been organised in front of one of the most popular cathedrals in the city. You can find handcrafted products here and a great assortment of decorations for the Holiday Season.

The importance of the Fira de Santa Llúcia also became clear because of texts by two Catalan culture personalities: aristocrat Rafael Amat, also known as Baron de Maldà, and folklorist Joan Amades.
