Alternative Therapies: Reflexology

Reflexology is a form of therapy in which the therapist applies pressure to specific points of the feet, hands or ears. It is believed that the points correspond to different organs and systems which, when pressed, have beneficial effects on the organs and the patient’s general health.

Is reflexology also a form of diagnosis?

No. Reflexology is used solely as a form of treatment.

What type of conditions can be treated with Reflexology?

Reflexology can be used as a form of treatment for problems such as anxiety and stress disorders, PMS, menstrual problems, joint pain, joint mobility, infertility and loss of libido, sleep problems, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, degenerative, sinus, skin, breathing and blood sugar disorders, toxin build up, low immunity, circulatory problems, hormonal imbalances, ear disorders, irregular blood pressure and problems with digestion and elimination (IBS, allergies, flatulence…).

Reflexology can also be used to treat emotional problems, as it helps release painful memories, reduces the symptoms of depression, relieves stress, calms anger, frustration and impatience, increasing positive emotions such as happiness, joy and enthusiasm.

Are there patients that shouldn’t use Reflexology?

Yes. People with current thrombosis or embolisms should not be treated with Reflexology since this form of therapy improves circulation and could potentially cause a blood clot to move to the heart or brain. People with foot fractures, unhealed wounds or  active gout on the foot also shouldn’t use Reflexology.

Those with vascular disease of the legs or feet or with osteoarthritis that impacts the foot or ankle should speak to their primary physicians before using reflexology.

What are some of the points and areas of Reflexology?

The main areas used for Reflexology are the hands, feet and ears. The points in the left foot, for example, correspond to the left side of the body and all organs and valves in that area. Points in the right food correspond to the right side of the body and the right side organs.
