Gran Teatre del Liceu

One of the most important theatres in Barcelona, Gran Teatre del Liceu has a history marked by tragedy. It is said that the site the theatre occupies today was commonly used for executions, which made it a cursed location. Coincidence or not, the theatre was mostly destroyed in a massive fire, only fourteen years after being built. And as if that wasn’t enough, there the theatre was the site of an anarchist attack in 1893, where dozens of people were killed. Oh, but wait! There’s more! Eleven years after the attack, and over a century after it was destroyed in the fire, Gran Teatre del Liceu went up in flames again.

Palau Güell

Technically, Palau Güell is only located where a haunted house used to be. Those who lived near Casa Ave Maria, famously known as “House of Fear” reported incessant screaming coming from the house every single night. It is said that horrible things happened in the house, which ended up being abandoned by its owners when they vanished, one day to the next.

Palau Güell is located at Carrer Nou de la Rambla, 3-5.

Carrer dels Mirallers

Those who had nightmares or couldn’t scream after watching “The Exorcist” should definitely steer clear of Carrer dels Mirallers, where demonic spirits are said to roam. It is said that nineteenth-century poet Jacint Verdaguer performed several exorcisms in his house, despite having no particular affiliation to the church, causing some of the demonic spirits to remain trapped in the house.

Mercat de Santa Caterina

Of all the mysterious phenomena that supposedly happened in Barcelona, none must have been as frightening as the apparition of Satan himself. Legend says the dark one appeared before numerous witnesses, invoked by witches performing black masses. This took place at the former Dominican convent that occupied the space where the colourful Mercat de Santa Caterina is located today.

Mercat de Santa Caterina is located at Avinguda de Francesc Cambó, 16.

Mercat de Sant Antoni

Another market that was built where dark events took place is Mercat de Sant Antoni. Before the market was built, the location used to be used for public executions by hanging. The site remained empty for a long time after the executions ended, due to the fact that no one wanted to build houses in that area or anywhere near it.
