Horchata is a drink that can be made using a variety of ingredients like almonds, barley, rice, tigernuts or sesame seeds. In Barcelona the most famous type of horchata is the horchata de chufa, which is made with ground tigernuts (chufa), water and sugar. Tigernuts are small tubers from a plant known as juncia avellanada, that have antiseptic properties and help promote a good digestion. In fact, the horchata is not only a refreshing and tasty drink, but also a source of calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamins C and E. Recent studies even suggest that Tigernuts can help prevent bone disease and cancer, thanks to its polyphenols and its antioxidant properties.
El tío Che
Famous for serving one of the best horchatas in the city, El tío Che has been in business for close to one hundred years. Their first location in Barcelona was in Born, followed by Barceloneta. It was only in the 1940s that El tío Che arrived in Poblenou, where it is still open today. Other than horchata, you can try a variety of granizados, artisan ice cream, sandwiches, vermuts, churros, waffles and artisanal nougats. You can find El tío Che at Rambla Poblenou 44-46.
La Valenciana
La Valenciana was founded in 1910 by the Jijonan Cortés family. The establishment offers a variety of ice creams, nougats, pastries and horchata. You can find this centenarian horchateria at Carrer d’Aribau 16.

Located at Portal de l’Àngel, Planelles Donat is famous for not only its horchata, but also for its artisanal nougats. Every edible or drinkable item sold at Planelles Donat is made with carefully selected goods through daily production, which is part of the reason customers choose this place for their sugary needs.
