VIDEO: Discovering barrio Gótico

It is well known that Barcelona is a dynamic city with a high quality of life. Between tradition and modernity, the city of Gaudí has become a destination visited in recent years for its climate and culture. This culture includes, of course, the various districts of the Catalan capital. Why not settle in this diverse city and enjoy one of the excellent apartments that we offer in ShBarcelona?

This week, we went to explore the oldest part of the city: the Gothic Quarter (el barrio Gótico). This part of the city was occupied by the Greeks and then the Romans, hence its Roman architecture. The Gothic Quarter belongs to the Ciutat Vella district, like the area of Ribera (better known under the name of “Born”), Barceloneta and Raval.

The Gótico is one of the most touristic area of the city that is surrounded by the city’s most famous street: the Rambla. Take the opportunity to stroll along this 1.2km avenue, which starts in Plaza Catalunya and ends at the statue of Cristobal Colón, almost reaching the sea. This avenue is full of small shops and places such as bars, florists and candy shops or souvenirs. Nearing the end, in the port area there are some portraitists and the famous human statues. At the beginning, next to Plaza de Catalunya, there is the famous Boqueria market, one of the oldest markets in Barcelona, where you can buy fresh local products at affordable prices. Do not forget to try one of the famous fruit juices offered in that market. In the Rambla, a little further down the Boqueria, it is also the Teatro del Liceo, one of the best theaters in the city.

It offers a spectacular Gothic architecture: it combines the old and the new, Roman art and Gothic art. In every corner, you can see a sample of this combined architecture. Magnificent monuments are erected in this neighborhood, as the churches of Santa Maria del Pi and Santa Maria del Mar. One of the best places remains the Cathedral, an impressive monument of Gothic architecture.

We invite you to wander endlessly through the Gothic Quarter and along its narrow streets full of charm. If you want to have a drink or eat something, you will also find a large number of small bars and restaurants serving Catalan and Spanish dishes. If you want to go out with friends, Gothic is an excellent choice. In the restaurants you will find the famous tapas accompanied by a local beer as Estrella Damm. In its streets you will see windows of big brand stores and independent brands as well and enjoy the shopping streets like Avenue Portal de l’Angel, Petritxol Street, Ferran street and Portaferrissa.
