Cupcakes in Barcelona

Barcelona is not the fastest to catch on when it comes to food fashions, here, tapas is king, but despite being a bit slow to join the cake race, Barcelona is now home to many small and girly bakeries that specialise in cupcakes – sumptuously soft and powdery cakes topped with buttery icing.

If you want to eat cupcakes in Barcelona, and who doesn’t, let’s face it, here are a few ‘cupcakeoriums’ or maybe ‘cupcakerias’ (in Spanish) that have caught our eye and tickled our tastebuds:

Lolitas

El Born and Eixample

Lolita’s looks good. It has all the makings of a fashionable NYC or London-style cupcakery: it’s cute and girly, pinkness attacks you in every direction, everything is beautifully presented, and row upon row of charming cupcakes inveigle you in with their soft powdery sponge bottoms topped with whipped and buttery crowns.

You can choose from vanilla, chocolate, carrot or red velvet and frosting is available in cotton candy, almond, hazelnut, blueberry, cappuccino, caramel, cherry, cava, chocolate, cream cheese, cookies and cream, dulce de leche, strawberry, raspberry, passion fruta, mandarin, mango, mint, mocha, nut, macchiato, lemon, melon, pear, pineapple, pistachio and tiramisu. Stop already!

Grrr. Me want cupcakes.

Give me cupcake now!

Amelia’s Bakery

Gracia

Amelia’s Bakery sells cupcakes, cookies, whoopies, tarts, brownies and regular ol’cakes. The ambience is typically cupcakey in pink and white, everything appears to be very clean and super feminine.

At Amelias the cupcakes come in flavours such as Madigascan vanilla, red velvet, chocolate orange, tiramisu, dulce de leche (caramel), coconut, milk chocolate, and white chocolate to name but a few.

Various locations

More than just a cupcake dealer, Cup and Cake has a fine array of cakes of different descriptions that come in some of the largest portions I’ve ever witnessed. Do you hear me complaining?

Giant slabs of fluffy red velvet cake with a genius layer of cream cheese and good quality cupcakes that will have you thinking there is a god.

And it’s not just cakes, Cup and Cake do a mean brunch, great salads and all kinds of other delectable comestibles.

Go there, now. That’s my advice.
