10 reasons to visit Barcelona in the autumn

People like to visit Barcelona throughout the year. If you can, we would suggest that you visit this amazing city in the autumn. Why would we suggest this you may be wondering? Well, below we offer up 10 reasons for doing so.

1. Between the months of September and November, you’ll find the weather is much cooler. So exploring the city is a lot more comfortable. However, make sure you pack something warm for the evenings. Normally temperatures during the day don’t reach much higher than 17 degrees Centigrade, however, at night they drop to around 5 degrees Centigrade.

2. You’ll find at this time of the year Barcelona tends not to be so crowded as a result you’ll find queues to visit attractions like Sagrada Familia or any of its museums tends to be shorter.

3. Not only will you find that there is a much larger selection of accommodation available to rent, it also tends to be cheaper as well at this time of the year.

4. Just because it’s autumn doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy the beach, in fact, most residents of the city tend to use it at this time of year for recreational purposes, including a spot of sunbathing.

5. At this time of the year, the Spanish football season (La Liga) is in full swing and no visit to the city would be complete without a chance to watch city’s team FC Barcelona at their ground Camp Nou. If you can make sure that you are then when a came between them and Real Madrid is to take place.

6. Shopping at this time of the year is a much more pleasurable experience as you won’t find yourself having to carry your bags around in temperatures of 28 degrees Centigrade or more.

7. If you happen to be in Barcelona on the 11th September then don’t forget to enjoy the sights and sounds of the region’s National Day (Diada de Catalunya). Marches to celebrate the region’s independence begin at the statue of Rafael Casanova and wind its way along Ronda Sant Pere.

8. Another great festival to enjoy at this time of the year is La Mercè. This normally takes place during the last week in September and lasts throughout the week. You really get the opportunity to experience some truly traditional festivities during this time including the likes of sardanes and correfocs.

9. If you intend to visit Barcelona in late October or early November then you should consider coming when La Castanyada takes place. As you wander through the streets you are going to be bombarded by the smells of fresh roasting chestnuts (castanyes) and sweet potatoes (boniatos) cooked on coal braziers. However, one particular delicacy you may want to try are the small almond balls covered in pine nuts known as Panellets.

10. For the music lovers among you why not come to the city in late October or November as at this time, the International Jazz Festival of Barcelona (Festival Internacional de Jazz de Barcelona) takes place. It is one of Europe’s largest and well-known Jazz festivals.
