La Escocesa, a meeting point for artists

La Escocesa is the curious name of this creative center that is located in a former industrial complex within the Poblenou district. In 2006 it was included in the Cultural Strategic Plan of Barcelona, under the “Factories for artistic creation” program. In early 2008 the City Council gave the management of this space to a group of artists from different disciplines called Associació d’Idees. Since then, this group organizes workshops, events, exhibitions, happenings and events in this space of over 2400m2, which is in continuous process of conditioning.

On the other hand La Escocesa is fully involved in the cultural activities of the neighborhood in which it is located and has been involved, for example, in the Tallers Oberts del Poblenou through actions, screenings, exhibitions, etc. Among La Escocesa latest cultural activities and artistic initiatives you will also find the presentation of André Broessel work, who has build up a crystal sphere that generates electricity in the center terrace, a drawing and performance workshop by Joan-Marc Llapispanc every Tuesday of October, or the call for all resident artists to collaborate on the collective mural “Scottish Wall”, on the walls of La Escocesa. For further information of our rental apartments in ShBarcelona click here.

Kike Bela, a young musician and cultural manager, is responsible for the financial administration of La Escocesa, and its programming and allocation of grants and exchanges with other cultural centers. The center hosts many resident artists working in its facilities with the benefits that entails and who are elected by a jury according to artistic quality criteria. According to Bela, the mission of this artistic production center (focused on the visual arts) is to give spaces to these artists at an affordable price for them to become professionals in their discipline and to promote their work. Currently, among the professionalsthat are “under the wing” of La Escocesa we will find emergent artists as Diego Mallo, Rina Ota, David Franklin, Germán Portal or Hugo Orlandini, among many others.
