Where to buy fresh fish in Barcelona

Cooking quality meals means more than just mixing food in a proper manner. It means, first of all, choosing the best ingredients, carefully preparing them and, only then, mixing them together. For a passionate cook, the process of selection can take hours. He or she will go to the store or market, compare products and prices, and maybe even asks for opinions.

If you love cooking but have not had the chance to walk around Barcelona either because your job keeps you way too busy or because you have been trying to find the perfect place to stay, here we leave you with some suggestions where you can find some of the best fresh fish in the city.

Mercat del Ninot

Markets are always the best places to find great quality fresh food at the best prices. Barcelona has a variety of historic markets, where you can go not only to shop but also to appreciate the architecture. That is the case of Ninot’s Market, an iron building from the 19th century. There, you can find vegetables, meat, flowers and, of course, fish. This market also has a restaurant area where you can sit to have a nice meal, in case you are buying ingredients to cook some other time.

Peixateria Galapagos

Peixateria Galapagos is located in Mercat Sagrada Familia, and it is is one of the best stands in there to buy fresh fish. This market doesn’t have as much history as Mercat del Ninot but it is still a beautiful building with very modern lines. It is worth the visit if you live around Sagrada Familia.

La Boquería

Also known as “Mercado de San José” (San José’s Market), La Boquería is usually crowded with tourists due to its location (La Rambla). It is the biggest market in Barcelona, with a huge diversity of products, be it local or exotic. Like Mercat del Ninot, La Boqueria also has a number of restaurants where you can stop for a meal or a quick bite.

Mercat de Santa Caterina

This might be the most colorful market in Barcelona, especially if you look at it from above! Built between 1844 and 1848, Mercat de Santa Caterina is the oldest market in the city. Here you can find fresh food such as vegetables, meat, seafood and other goods like sweets or local charcuterie.
