When you consider air pollution, you may think of cases in the world\u2019s largest cities in overcrowded urban areas in countries like <\/span><b>China and India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where you hear about growing levels of environmental pollution that cause people to wear masks to protect their lungs from their unhealthy air. In Spain, luckily, we have not reached those levels yet, but big cities like Madrid and Barcelona are reaching higher and higher levels of pollution and getting closer to that line. Incidents of contamination are considered to be those in which the levels of <\/span><b>contaminants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the atmosphere are higher than the recommended maximum levels as dictated by the European Union. This excess of contaminants causes health problems for citizens, not to growing numbers of allergies related to the horrible <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/home-indoor-plants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>air quality<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The most vulnerable populations to these risk caused by air pollution include young children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses or respiratory problems. As previously mentioned, those with allergies can also experience worsened symptoms. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_97194\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97194\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-97194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/person-731492_1280-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-97194\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo via Pixabay<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health officials recommend that the population listen to the following pieces of advice to protect their lungs and avoid health problems &#8211; if there is an alert regarding potentially bad air quality, it is best to limit your <\/span><b>physical exercise <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the outdoors, especially for those in the aforementioned more vulnerable groups. If an alert states that the levels of contamination have surpassed the recommended maximum, then avoid outdoor physical exercise altogether. To mitigate the negative <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/healthcare-and-medical-treatment-in-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>health<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> effects of pollution, health officials recommend the following &#8211; either walking or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/bicycle-tours-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>biking<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through the city or using public transport when possible, sharing private transport with others when you can and using heat and air conditioning in moderation at your home and place of work. It is also recommended to ventilate and air out rooms at times of less traffic. Generally, the districts with more dense populations, such as <\/span><b>Ciutat Vella <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><b>Sant Mart\u00ed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are those with the worst air quality. On the other hand, the higher-elevation districts with more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/barcelona-pushes-for-green-spaces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>green spaces<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and less dense population have better air quality. This is the case in the highest parts of <\/span><b>Gracia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>Horta-Guinard\u00f3 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neighborhood and the high areas of <\/span><b>Sarri\u00e0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
