Sant Mart\u00ed <\/b>is one of the largest districts in Barcelona, made up of ten neighborhoods, among which are: Camp de l\u2019Arpa, El Clot, El Parc y la Llacuna del Poblenou, La Vila Ol\u00edmpica, Poblenou, Diagonal Mar i Front Mar\u00edtim, El Bes\u00f3s y El Maresme, Proven\u00e7als del Poblenou, Sant Mart\u00ed de Proven\u00e7als y La Verdena i La Pau. Coming up on November 15, various neighborhoods in this district will be celebrating their major festivals, and we\u2019ll be telling you about what to expect from them in this article from ShBarcelona<\/strong><\/a> – let\u2019s get ready for the\u00a0<\/span>fiestas mayores, <\/i><\/b>or \u201cbig parties\u201d, of Sant Mart\u00ed!<\/b><\/p>\n

The essential nucleus of the neighborhood where the celebrations in Sant Mart\u00ed take place is in the <\/span>Verneda i la Pau<\/b>. The Sant Mart\u00ed neighborhood celebrations take place in honor of <\/span>Sant Mart\u00ed<\/b>, the namesake patron of the district, as well as one of the most popular saints in Europe during the Middle Ages. <\/span>La Vernada<\/b> is also the center as the old town area of the district, whose history dates back to the 11th century (for real – no more, no less). The <\/span>Sant Mart\u00ed church<\/b>, the heart of the neighborhood, separated from <\/span>Santa Mar\u00eda del Mar<\/b><\/a> and constituted its own town until practically the beginning of the 20th century, until 1897. Then, the Vernada became an annexed part of Barcelona once again. From then on, it was a rural town, and didn\u2019t lose its rural identity until halfway through the 20th century, when the crop fields gave way to other urban projects that were developing at the time, and the neighborhood slowly converted into what it is now. <\/span><\/p>\n

As is tradition in all the fiestas mayores in Barcelona\u2019s neighborhoods, the celebration opens with a line of <\/span>gigantes<\/i><\/b> and <\/b>cabezudos<\/i><\/b><\/a>, meaning \u201cgiants\u201d and \u201cbig heads\u201d, from the <\/span>Colla Gigantera de la Verneda i la Pau<\/b>, which takes place on <\/span>the first Saturday of November <\/b>at the <\/span>Rambla de la Selva de Mar<\/b>, after the opening ceremony. The stars of the show will be <\/span>Mart\u00ed and la Dol\u00e7a<\/b>, the giant hosts of the celebration. Happening at the same time as this parade, the Barcelona <\/span>castellers<\/b> will be offering a performance. The <\/span>casteller performances<\/b><\/a> are common during fiestas mayores in all the neighborhoods and towns of Barcelona. The following day, at the <\/span>Rambla Guip\u00fazcoa <\/b>and the <\/span>Selva de Mar<\/b>, there are\u00a0<\/span>different acts by the neighborhood entities <\/b>and an exhibition of <\/span>traditional dance<\/b><\/a>. Last but not least, the traditional <\/span>singing of Habaneras<\/b> (<\/span>cantada de habaneras<\/span><\/i>) will take place in the <\/span>G\u00e0bia in Sant Mart\u00ed park. <\/b>All of these elements are indispensable parts of the traditional festivals of Barcelona and Catalonia.
