It is named after Saint Cucuphas, or Sant\u00a0<span lang=\"ca\" xml:lang=\"ca\">Cugat in Catalan<\/span>, who was martyred where the monastery was built around the year 304 AD. For centuries, it was primarily a village outside Barcelona where Benedictine monks stayed near other villages along the outskirts of the city. Recently, <strong>Sant Cugat&#8217;s<\/strong> population has risen from 35,000 in the 1980s to over 87,000 today. It has become an affluent suburb near the towns of\u00a0<strong>Rub\u00ed<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Cerdanyola del Vall\u00e8s<\/strong>. In 1835, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/pedralbes-monastery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">monastery<\/a> was abandoned by the monks, but later restored and declared a National Monument in 1931. The main features of the monastery are its cloister, a notable piece of Romanesque art, its Gothicesque atrium and entrance, and its large rose glass facade.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<b>Sant Cugat Museum\u00a0<\/b>is a preservation center for the historic, artistic, and cultural heritage in the area. Opened in 2003, it&#8217;s part of the\u00a0<b>Barcelona Provincial Council Local Museum Network\u00a0<\/b>that preserves the heritage and history of towns like <strong>Sant Cugat<\/strong>.
