The first development Sant Antoni goes back to the 1800s when the city of Barcelona began expanding from the old medieval town out towards the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/discover-eixample\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Eixample district<\/strong><\/a>. The neighborhood is now located entirely within <strong>Eixample,<\/strong> forming the district&#8217;s bottom corner. It stretches between Pla\u00e7a Espanya and Pla\u00e7a Universitat, in the shape of a triangle wedged between Gran Via de Les Corts Catalanes and Paral\u00b7lel.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Development\"><\/span>Development<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The development of <strong>Sant Antoni<\/strong> started with the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercatdesantantoni.cat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"broken_link\">Mercat de Sant Antoni<\/a><\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the neighborhood&#8217;s famous marketplace<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>that remains one of the oldest and most popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/barcelona-food-markets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">markets<\/a> in Barcelona today.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0It\u00a0was designed by architect\u00a0Antoni Rovira i Trias and constructed between 1872 and 1882. At the time of construction, there were very few other buildings in the area near the market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The neighborhood really began to develop in the 1920s and 1930s when construction began on most of the buildings that can be seen in <strong>Sant Antoni<\/strong> today. The development of the neighborhood was part of a huge wave of changes in the city around the time of the International Exposition of 1929. Throughout the 20th century, <strong>Sant Antoni<\/strong> was known as the working class neighborhood of Barcelona. It&#8217;s a popular place to live for its quiet atmosphere and central location. The vibe of the neighborhood is relaxed and local, with plenty of great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/tapas-sant-antoni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tapas<\/a> bars and caf\u00e9s with outdoor seating.
