In the wake of the recent <strong>Catalan independence<\/strong> referendum and the resulting discontent, <strong>Tabarnia\u00a0<\/strong>developed as a political movement operating under the slogan &#8220;<strong>Barcelona is not Catalonia<\/strong>.&#8221; But what exactly is <strong>Tabarnia<\/strong> and what does it advocate for? Their idea is to create another <strong>autonomous community<\/strong> within Spain called <strong>Tabarnia\u00a0<\/strong>that would\u00a0consist of Barcelona and Tarragona as a community separate from <strong>Catalonia<\/strong>. This new community would decide to remain part of Spain in the result of <strong>Catalan independence<\/strong>\u00a0should it occur.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The idea was originally developed back in 2011, but following the recent <strong>Catalan regional elections<\/strong> on the 21st of December 2017, was brought to light again alongside the election results shown on a map of Catalonia. While much of the map is blue (pro-independence) Barcelona and Tarragona are clearly shown in red (pro-union). Following the results, the search term <em><strong>Tabarnia<\/strong><\/em> went viral on the 26th of December 2017, provoking a renewed interest in the cause.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Related article: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/catalonian-independence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why Some Catalans Want Independence<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Politics\"><\/span>Politics<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-93737 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/flag-2673580_1920-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"161\" \/>Tabarnia<\/strong> supporters want to use the platform as a way to distance themselves from the <strong>separatist movement<\/strong> in Catalonia. They claim that electoral representation in Catalonia is unfair- In Barcelona, 48.5 votes are needed to elect a representative in the Catalan parliament compared to the 20.9 votes required in Lleida, for example.
