Instead, under their constitution, the Spanish government\u00a0dissolved the <strong>Catalan parliament<\/strong> and forced new elections, which were won by <strong>pro-independence parties<\/strong>. There continues to be a stalemate over the crisis, with the Catalan parliament rejecting a ruling by the Spanish Supreme Court to suspend pro-independence politicians from government positions on October 2, 2018, according to Reuters. First,\u00a0there is the <strong>Spanish Socialist Workers&#8217; Party<\/strong>, the center-left, <strong>social democratic party<\/strong> which is the oldest party functioning in Spain and Catalonia. It was founded in 1879, surviving dictatorships, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/civil-war-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Civil War<\/a>, and other conflicts in the country. C<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urrent Spanish Prime Minister <\/span><b>Pedro S\u00e1nchez <\/b>(right)\u00a0is a member<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0of the Socialist Workers Party, and in June 2018 ousted f<\/span><span>ormer Prime Minister<\/span><b> Mariano Rajoy<\/b><span>, who held the <strong>People&#8217;s Party<\/strong> in power in Spain until his fall.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<strong>People&#8217;s Party\u00a0<\/strong>is currently\u00a0the least represented party in the <strong>Catalan parliament<\/strong>\u00a0with just three seats, and is know for its former iron-fisted rule on Catalonia&#8217;s push for independence. The party is conservative, pro-monarchy, and pro-union, opposing Catalan&#8217;s push for independence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Next, there is the <strong>Spanish Socialist Workers&#8217; Party<\/strong>, the center-left, <strong>social democratic party<\/strong> which is the oldest party functioning in Spain and Catalonia. It was founded in 1879, surviving dictatorships, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/civil-war-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Civil War<\/a>, and other conflicts in the country. There are also two parties founded in the last decade.<strong> Citizens<\/strong>,\u00a0a centrist party formed in 2006 and founded in Barcelona, promotes classical <strong>liberalism,<\/strong> Pro-Europeanism, and Spanish unionism while strongly opposing Catalan independence. They won the most seats in December&#8217;s election with 36 seats in Catalonia&#8217;s parliament.\u00a0<span lang=\"es\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/the-new-spanish-political-party-podemos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Podemos<\/strong><\/a>, or &#8220;we can&#8221; in English, is a <strong>left-wing populist party<\/strong> that advocates eco-politics, de-centralization among each region in Spain, and economic reforms that promote\u00a0a basic income for all citizens, more spending on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/healthcare-and-medical-treatment-in-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health care<\/a><\/strong> and housing to fight poverty, and tax avoidance laws against big corporations. They only hold eight seats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Catalan_Nationalist_Parties\"><\/span>Catalan Nationalist Parties<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_93686\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93686\" class=\" wp-image-93686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/8200171213_ac56c2f970_c-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"173\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-93686\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Converg\u00e8ncia Democr\u00e0tica de Catalunya via Visualhunt<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These parties range from <strong>center-right<\/strong> to <strong>left-wing<\/strong>, all promoting <strong>Catalan nationalism<\/strong> and separatism, which has been in conflict recently. First, there is <strong>Together for Catalonia<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Also known as\u00a0<b>Junts per Catalunya\u00a0<\/b>in Catalan, this party is a coalition of the centrist\u00a0<b>Catalan European Democratic Party <\/b>and a group of listed independent politicians. The party is led by <strong>Carles Puigdemont<\/strong>, the controversial leader who has been in exile in Belgium to avoid prosecution for holding the illegal <strong>referendum<\/strong>. The party currently holds 34 seats, currently the second-highest number in Catalonia&#8217;s parliament. Another center-right <strong>Catalan nationalist party<\/strong> is the\u00a0<b>Democrats of Catalonia.\u00a0<\/b>Next, there is the\u00a0<b>Republican Left of Catalonia-Catalonia Yes <\/b>party,<b> <\/b>an\u00a0alliance of parties that are <strong>center-left<\/strong> to <strong>left-wing<\/strong>, with the <strong>Republican Left<\/strong> as the historic Catalan party founded in 1931, the year of Spain&#8217;s Second Spanish Republic.\u00a0Llu\u00eds Companys, Catalonia&#8217;s last\u00a0President before the fall of the Republic to Franco&#8217;s forces, was a founding member of the party. Only a few years old, they won four seats in last month&#8217;s election. They&#8217;re a coalition of the <strong>PUC<\/strong> and several far-left groups, including <strong>communist<\/strong> parties. Its main leaders are former writers, journalists, teachers, doctors, and other professionals making their first move into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/the-current-state-of-catalan-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>politics<\/strong><\/a>.
