Its massive stream through the city, however, made it susceptible to pollution, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/catalonia-rivers-lakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>river<\/strong><\/a> was among Spain&#8217;s worst polluted in the 70s and 80s. However, this was rectified with an ongoing project to clean up the waters and keep them clean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>river<\/strong> is managed along the lowlands in order to reduce the chance of floods in Barcelona from heavy rainfall. Instead of just\u00a0being let go at sea, water is also pumped upstream to improve the natural flow, recharging the delta wetlands and stopping any seawater incursion. The most popular place to see the <strong>Llobregat<\/strong> is the\u00a0<strong>Devil&#8217;s Bridge,\u00a0<\/strong>a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/medieval-villages-catalonia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medieval<\/a> pedestrian bridge made of stone.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tordera\"><\/span>Tordera<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_93575\" style=\"width: 308px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93575\" class=\" wp-image-93575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/15706207843_aeb798f17f-300x146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"145\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-93575\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Albert T M via Visualhunt<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This <strong>river<\/strong> is technically outside of Barcelona, but worth a visit for its natural beauty and historical recognition. The\u00a0<strong>Tordera River<\/strong>, named after the town it cuts through, is 34\u00a0miles long from the <strong>Montseny massif<\/strong> to the sea. Ecologically, the lagoon around the delta\u00a0towards the coast is an important place for migratory birds. Historically, it was the sight of one of the last battles in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/civil-war-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Spanish Civil War<\/strong><\/a>. In January 1939, as Barcelona was threatened by Nationalist forces, the last defensive line of Republican forces held up along the <strong>Tordera river<\/strong>. In the 70s and 80s, as the city modernized, the river, unfortunately, became very polluted, just like the <strong>Llobregat<\/strong>. More recently, the country made strides to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/recycle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environmentally<\/a> conscious and cleaned up the <strong>river<\/strong>, and<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Parc Fluvial del Bes\u00f2s<\/strong>\u00a0opened in 2004, promoting open recreation along the <strong>river<\/strong>.
