The basic\u00a0<strong>turr\u00f3n<\/strong> or in Catalan,\u00a0<strong>turr\u00f3<\/strong>, is created with a mix of almonds, sugar, honey and egg whites, but there is actually a wide variety to choose from. The most popular types of\u00a0<strong>turr\u00f3n<\/strong> are the one from <strong>Alicante,<\/strong> which if hard, and the one from <strong>Jijona,<\/strong> which is soft. If you want to have an authentic\u00a0<strong>Catalan turr\u00f3n<\/strong>, try the one from <strong>Agramunt.\u00a0<\/strong>If you want something completely different, then make sure you visit specialized\u00a0<strong>turr\u00f3n<\/strong> venues, where you will be able to find such variations as <strong>truffle turr\u00f3n, chocolate turr\u00f3n, coconut turr\u00f3n,<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0pistachio turr\u00f3n.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bunuelos\"><\/span>Bu\u00f1uelos<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Bu\u00f1uelos<\/strong> are a type of pastry made with flour, eggs, water and\/or milk, which is then deep fried and many times, covered in sugar.\u00a0<strong>Bu\u00f1uelos<\/strong> are consumed in a large number of countries in the world, including Argentina, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/french-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">France<\/a>, Panam\u00e1, and Bolivia. In Spain, they are eaten at different times of the year and prepared in different ways depending on the region. In\u00a0<strong>Catalonia,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>bu\u00f1uelos<\/strong> are mostly consumed during Lent. The\u00a0<strong>tortel\u00a0<\/strong><strong>de reyes<\/strong> is a round,\u00a0puffy pastry, usually filled with marzipan, covered in crystallized fruits and dried nuts. People know to bite carefully into each slice of the\u00a0<strong>tortel<\/strong>, since somewhere in the pastry is either an uncooked fava bean, a ceramic figure or something else hard. The person who is lucky enough to get the slice with this treat gets to be the one to buy the\u00a0<strong>tortel<\/strong> the following holiday season.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Xuixos\"><\/span>Xuixos<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Xuixos<\/strong> are a cylindrical-shaped <em>viennoiserie<\/em> pastry which is filled with the famous\u00a0<strong>creama catalana<\/strong>. This, like the\u00a0<strong>bu\u00f1uelos<\/strong>, is also deep fried and covered in crystalized sugar. This type of sweet, which sometimes can also resemble a croissant, was originally created in the region of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/barcelona-to-girona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Girona<\/a>\u00a0and it comes with a very amusing legend. It is said that, many decades ago, the people became sick and were put under quarantine. Tarl\u00e0, a gifted acrobat, decided to keep everyone&#8217;s spirits up by putting on shows and ended up falling in love with the daughter of a pastry chef. One day, the chef entered the bakery with a bag of flower, which made Tarl\u00e0 sneeze and get caught. Tarl\u00e0 promised to marry the baker&#8217;s daughter and, to appease the man&#8217;s nerves, offered him the recipe for this pastry, which was then named after his sneeze, which sounded something like &#8220;xui!&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Panellets\"><\/span>Panellets<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Panellets<\/strong>\u00a0are small, ball-shaped sweets that are typical of not only\u00a0<strong>Catalonia<\/strong> but also other regions of Spain like Ibiza and Valencia. Typically eaten on November 1st, All Saints Day, with a side of muscatel, the\u00a0<strong>panellets<\/strong>\u00a0come in a variety of tastes, like chocolate, coffee, coconut, and other. Like any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/a-sweet-tour-of-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sweet<\/a> that has become very popular to have around the holidays, the\u00a0<strong>polvorones<\/strong> started popping up in a variety of flavors, like orange, chocolate, and vanilla.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Neules\"><\/span>Neules<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Neules\u00a0<\/strong>are very light, tasty biscuits made out of flour, butter, egg whites, and sugar. The\u00a0<strong>neules<\/strong> are long and tube-shaped, very fragile to the touch. They are usually eaten around Christmas time, and can now are available in a variety of tastes, like chocolate and\u00a0turr\u00f3n.
