(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcn.cat\/novaciutadania\/arees\/en\/salut\/tramits.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Tarjeta Sanitaria Individual<\/a>), it is best to head to the nearest <a href=\"http:\/\/web.gencat.cat\/en\/temes\/salut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">CatSalut health <\/a>centre (CAP) or CUAP (for out-of-hours care). Take any <strong>health insurance documents<\/strong> you have (in Europe, an EHIC is sufficient) as well as proof of I.D. (passport and DNI\/NIE if you have it).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The public <strong>healthcare system<\/strong> in Barcelona is excellent, and you should be seen by a doctor on the same day. If you have a medical <strong>emergency, <\/strong>but are still able to make your own way to <strong>hospital<\/strong>, head for the nearest <em>Urg\u00e8ncies<\/em> (A&amp;E) department. The CatSalut medical emergency number is 06. However, if you have a life-threatening <strong>emergency<\/strong> requiring an ambulance, <strong>call 112<\/strong> and ask for <em>una ambulancia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are no guarantees you will be seen by an English-speaking doctor or that the staff can speak English,\u00a0so it is worth learning some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.practicingspanish.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">key phrases relating to healthcare<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you need to see a specialist, you must either hold private medical insurance or a TSI to access the public <strong>healthcare<\/strong> system. The medical care in the public health system as Spain is ranked one of the best in Europe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Related article: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/english-doctors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">English-speaking doctors in Barcelona<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Barcelonas_main_hospitals\"><\/span>Barcelona&#8217;s main hospitals<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Not to be confused with the nearby <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/sant-pau-modernista\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Modernist building<\/a><\/strong>, which was once the main hospital in this area, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santpau.cat\/web\/public\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>Sant Pau<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is the <strong>main hospital<\/strong> serving the Dreta de L&#8217;Eixample. Affiliated to the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, this is a vast and specially-designed building that offers a full range of medical services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is a metro stop right outside the hospital: Guinard\u00f3\/Hospital Sant Pau on L4. It is a <strong>university hospital<\/strong> with an emergency department, as well as a full range of clinical services. For this reason, it went on to specialize in the treatment of infectious diseases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was used as the main <strong>healthcare<\/strong> center for athletes and delegates of the 1992 Olympics and it was renovated in 2008. The\u00a0buses D20, 49 and 55 stop right outside. The hospital can also be easily reached metro or tram, from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmb.cat\/en\/barcelona\/metro\/-\/lineametro\/L4\/estacion\/421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Ciutadella\/Villa Olympica station<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Address:<\/strong> <span class=\"section-info-text\">Passeig Mar\u00edtim, 25-29.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Hospital Vall d&#8217;Hebron<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the north of Barcelona, on the lower slopes of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/the-natural-side-of-barcelona-collserola-mountains\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Collserola<\/a><\/strong> mountain range, you will find <strong>Hospital Val d&#8217;Hebron<\/strong> which was opened in 1955. This is a massive <strong>university hospital<\/strong> covering all medical and surgical areas of expertise.\u00a0It also has a renowned maternity unit.
