This is the so-called <em><strong>&#8220;holy week&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>. For some years there has been a big debate about those\u00a0missed workdays. The government, employers and trade unions decided to solve this problem by amending the legislation and changing some <strong>public holidays<\/strong> that fall on weekdays. The\u00a0Catalan tradition is to eat a grape at each midnight\u00a0stroke.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>January 6th<\/strong>: this is the day with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/dia-de-los-reyes-magos-the-three-wise-men-day\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Three Kings Parade<\/strong><\/a> when they distribute candy to the children in the street. According to tradition, a pair of shoes must be put on\u00a0the balcony.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>February 12th<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/santa-eulalias-festival-celebrating-the-bravery-of-a-unique-child\/\" target=\"_blank\">Santa Eulalia<\/a>&#8216;s day. Santa Eulalia is the patron saint of Barcelona. This is the day of arts and science awards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Carnaval<\/strong> (first week of February): <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/costume-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Carnival<\/strong><\/a> (<em>Carnestoltes<\/em>) in Barcelona is manifested through costumed parades and celebrations in the streets until <strong>Shrove Tuesday<\/strong>. A large parade of floats and carriages roams around on Saturday afternoon from Pla\u00e7a Espanya then along Carrer de la Creu Coberta. <strong>Carnival<\/strong> ends on <strong>Ash Wednesday<\/strong> with the burial of the sardine. It is a <strong>carnival<\/strong> which refers to the 40 days of <strong>Lent<\/strong>. Everyone dresses up in the streets in <strong>Carnival.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Holy Week<\/strong> (last week of March): This is a week of local and religious festivals. It celebrates the death and passion of Olesa and passion of Esparreguera.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>April 23rd<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/palau-sant-jordi\/\" target=\"_blank\">San Jorge<\/a> (similar to Valentine&#8217;s Day)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>May 18th<\/strong>: Museum Day. A day when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/thought-inspiring-museums-in-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\">museums<\/a> are open and free to give everyone access to Barcelona&#8217;s culture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Patum of Berga<\/strong>: one of the most famous festivals in <strong>Catalonia.<\/strong> Giant mythological creatures march in the streets for three days in May.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Related article:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/barcelona-street-party-gracia-merce\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barcelona street celebrations create the perfect party atmosphere<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>23rd-24th of June<\/strong>: <em>revetlla<\/em>\u00a0de Sant Juan and\u00a0Sant Pere &#8211; <strong>Sant Joan bonfires<\/strong>. It is the longest night of summer when the population pays tribute to the Spanish witches by lighting bonfires in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/parks\/\" target=\"_blank\">parks<\/a>\u00a0and beaches, with fireworks, firecrackers, and beach parties. Various religious festivals take place the following week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>15th-21st of August<\/strong>: <strong>Feast of Gracia<\/strong>. All areas of the city have their own party and compete with each other by decorating their streets. The best embellishment is awarded by\u00a0Barcelona&#8217;s city hall. It is also an opportunity to participate in activities and concerts all over the city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>September 24th<\/strong>: Feast of <em>La Merce<\/em>, the largest in the city. This is a hollow trunk with a face, covered with a blanket and &#8220;fed&#8221; every night from December 8th.
