{"id":72753,"date":"2016-11-12T15:50:28","date_gmt":"2016-11-12T14:50:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/?p=72753"},"modified":"2021-04-19T18:17:10","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T16:17:10","slug":"eusebi-guell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/eusebi-guell\/","title":{"rendered":"Eusebi Guell: Gaudi&#8217;s friend and patron"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The name of <strong>G\u00fcell<\/strong> is associated with many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/buildings-eixample\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Modernista monuments<\/strong><\/a> of Barcelona and the surrounding area, most often in connection with the architect Antoni <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/casa-museu-gaudi-in-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Gaud\u00ed<\/strong><\/a>. The reason being that Eusebi <strong>G\u00fcell<\/strong> (1846-1918) was the man who gave <strong>Gaud\u00ed<\/strong> his first architectural commissions, and sponsored much of the architect&#8217;s early work. They became lifelong friends through shared interests such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/sagrada-familia-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>architecture<\/strong><\/a> and Catholicism. <strong>G\u00fcell<\/strong> was the son of a wealthy industrialist who went on to increase his family&#8217;s fortunes, mainly through the textile industry. He met <strong>Gaud\u00ed<\/strong> at the <strong>Paris World Fair<\/strong> in 1878 and was attracted by his architectural style through which he planned to create <strong>unique monuments<\/strong> commemorating and immortalising the family name. Pedralbes in Sarri\u00e0. Built between 1884 and 1887, here <strong>Gaud\u00ed<\/strong> first experimented with the <em>trencadis<\/em> mosaic style (where broken pieces of ceramic are used to adorn uneven surfaces). <strong>The Pavilions<\/strong> are a fine example of early Modernist <strong>architecture<\/strong>, with Neo-Mud\u00e9jar brickwork and <strong>Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s<\/strong> penchant for naturalistic forms already clearly evident.\u00a0 The crowning glory of the site, however, is the wrought-iron dragon which coils itself around the gateway and depicts the creature from the Garden of the Hesperides commemorated in Verdaguer&#8217;s epic poem <em>L&#8217;Atl\u00e0ntida<\/em>. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barcelonaturisme.com\/wv3\/en\/page\/607\/pavellons-de-la-finca-guell.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Pavilions<\/a> are open from 10am &#8211; 4pm, and the entrance fee is \u20ac4. The Pavilions are all that survive of <strong>G\u00fcell&#8217;s<\/strong> estate today, the remainder having been sold off in order to build the <strong>Palau Reial de Pedralbes<\/strong>, formerly the Residence of the Spanish royal family in Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Gaud\u00ed<\/strong> was also commissioned to design and build the <a href=\"http:\/\/palauguell.cat\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Palau G\u00fcell<\/a>, <strong>G\u00fcell&#8217;s<\/strong> city mansion, early in his career. In this Palace in the centre of Barcelona, we can trace the development of <strong>Gaud\u00ed<\/strong>&#8216;s unique architectural style. The entrance gate is adorned by a mythical bird similar to the dragon of the Pavilions. A general admission ticket costs \u20ac12, but the Palace can be visited for <strong>free<\/strong> on the first Sunday of every month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Related article:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/mosaic-fresco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em> Mosaics and Frescoes of Barcelona<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Later_collaborations_with_Guell_Park_Guell_and_Colonia_Guell\"><\/span>Later collaborations with Guell: Park Guell and Colonia Guell<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The most famous of all works commissioned by <strong>G\u00fcell<\/strong> is surely\u00a0<strong>Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s<\/strong> park in the Gr\u00e0cia neigbourhood of Barcelona, built between 1900 and 1914. The park was envisaged as the grounds of a residential development for the city&#8217;s wealthy classes, but due to problems financing the project, only two houses were built on the site. <strong>Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s<\/strong> home in the park (now the <strong>Casa Museu<\/strong> <strong>Gaud\u00ed<\/strong>) was built by his assistant Francesc Berenguer as a show-house for the project. The space became a <strong>public <\/strong>park, and is today owned by Barcelona&#8217;s City Council. There is a charge to enter the <a href=\"https:\/\/parkguell.barcelona\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">monumental zone<\/a>, which contains <strong>Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s<\/strong> masterpieces including the hypostyle room with its labyrinthine forest of columns, and the much-imitated mosaic salamander which snakes its way down the main monumental staircase.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Related article: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/park-guell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A visit to Park G\u00fcell<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72813\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72813\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72813\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Colonia-Guell-Church--300x206.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by: Pepe Manteca via Visualhunt.com \/ CC BY-NC-ND\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-72813\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by: Pepe Manteca via Visualhunt.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Perhaps the most ambitious of <strong>G\u00fcell&#8217;s<\/strong> projects was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gaudicoloniaguell.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Col\u00f2nia Guell<\/a> (see featured image), a model town built for the workers in his textile factory, on the principles of social inclusion, after the model of the British industrialist Robert Owen. The aim was not just to increase productivity in his factories, but also to improve the lives of workers by providing them with a good standard of housing, education, and amenities. Although the town itself is worth visiting for its fine examples of <strong>Modernist<\/strong> <strong>architecture<\/strong>, the highlight is undoubtedly <strong>Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s<\/strong> unfinished <strong>Church of Col\u00f2nia<\/strong> <strong>G\u00fcell <\/strong>(pictured right). Due to <strong>G\u00fcell<\/strong> running into financial difficulties, the church was never finished, though the crypt and its exterior represent a fine example of <strong>Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s<\/strong> later work, which also served as a model for many of his designs for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/sagrada-familia-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sagrada Fam\u00edlia<\/strong><\/a>. Such is its architectural value that it is has been denoted a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
