Native to the regions of Andalusia, Extremadura and Murcia, <strong>flamenco<\/strong> started as a musical and theatrical representation of local traditions. Deriving its name from \u201cfire\u201d or \u201cflame\u201d, its singer and dancer is generally a woman (although there are exceptions to that rule) dressed in vibrant colours. There is a role for you in <strong>flamenco<\/strong> if you\u2019re a singer and dancer (you\u2019d probably need some new items on your wardrobe, though), a guitarist or a percussionist. If you\u2019re new to the genre, it\u2019s easier to jump right in if you play an instrument.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Spanish guitar \u2013<\/strong> The most important instrument in <strong>flamenco<\/strong> music, it utilises the Andalusian scale to give the pieces their unique mood and character. It\u2019s used as both a base for the singing and a soloist instrument.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Caj\u00f3n \u2013<\/strong> This six-sided wooden box with a whole in the middle was first introduced to <strong>flamenco<\/strong> by the legendary <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2oyhlad64-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Paco de Lucia<\/a> in the 70s. Percussionists, who sit on it, play a rhythm by slapping the front of the box with their fingers and hands. Originally from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/best-peruvian-restaurants-in-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peru<\/a>, it continues to become more and more popular, in part due to how easy it is to integrate in a <strong>flamenco jam session<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Castanets \u2013<\/strong> One of the foundations of Spanish folklore,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1_gm9cG_MYA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> Castanets<\/a> consist of a pair of concave shells tied together by a string.
