The city\u2019s poorer denizens were in great need of a more open and sanitised space in which to live. The <strong>Eixample<\/strong> (or \u2018extension\u2019) was the proposal made by Ildefons <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ildefons_Cerd%C3%A0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Cerd\u00e0<\/a> aimed at alleviating, or ideally eradicating these social ills. Cerd\u00e0&#8217;s vision was that of a city where all sections of society might live side by side in surroundings conducive to the common good &#8211; suffuse with natural light and ventilation, where traffic could circulate easily. He came up with a plan for a district built on a grid-iron pattern, with the main thoroughfares (such as Avinguda Diagonal and the Gran Via Des Cortes Catalans) crisscrossing the residential areas. Although his vision was not to be fully realised, he can still be credited with the basic idea for the shape of the district we see today. The \u2018cut off\u2019 corners of buildings at the end of each block in this area were designed by Cerd\u00e0 to facilitate the movement of horse-drawn carriages and steam trams.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cerd\u00e0 envisioned a kind of urban social paradise with a garden at the centre of each block, and buildings kept below a certain height to afford plenty of light and fresh air to its denizens. However, under pressure from developers and property speculators to cram more living space into the area, the city&#8217;s government allowed the construction of multi-story buildings and neglected many of Cerd\u00e0\u2019s plans for gardens and natural light.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Today\"><\/span>Today<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_67353\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Aerial.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67353\" class=\"wp-image-67353 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Aerial-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Photo credit: aldask via Visual Hunt \/ CC BY-NC-ND\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-67353\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo credit: aldask via Visual Hunt \/ CC BY-NC-ND<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The area known as the <strong>Eixample<\/strong> encapsulates some of the finest examples of Modernista architecture, including <strong>Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sagradafamilia.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Sagrada Fam\u00edlia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lapedrera.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">La Pedrera<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casabatllo.es\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Casa Battl\u00f3<\/a>.\u00a0 Also striking is the fact that one can walk the length of the city from southwest to northeast simply by following the Gran Via des Cortes Catalans. The district represents an attempt to promote the new Catalan identity and forge a well-planned route into the future. It is worth seeing from above if you can afford the price of a scenic <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/cathelicopters.com\/?lang=en\">helicopter tour<\/span> or plane ride. Though the central district around Passeig de Gracia and <strong>Eixample<\/strong> Dreta houses the most exclusive, up-market hotels and designer shops, a greater cross-section of society can be found at the outer extremities of the area, which are primarily residential.Many of the parks envisioned by Cerd\u00e0 are finally being built, and although not as numerous as he imagined, there are instead large public parks such as Parc de l&#8217;Estacio del Nord. <strong>Eixample<\/strong> today is a pleasant modern <strong>residential<\/strong> area, where many short-, mid- and long-term apartments can be found.
