{"id":64474,"date":"2016-03-26T11:58:53","date_gmt":"2016-03-26T10:58:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/?p=64474"},"modified":"2016-11-10T15:32:27","modified_gmt":"2016-11-10T14:32:27","slug":"the-current-state-of-catalan-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/the-current-state-of-catalan-politics\/","title":{"rendered":"The current state of Catalan politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Catalonian independence movement<\/strong> is strong in Barcelona, stemming from the Spanish Civil War and Franco\u2019s dictatorship, but <strong>Catalans<\/strong> are divided about whether they wish to separate from Spain for economic reasons alone, or whether political and cultural factors are equally important. As a result, the Spanish flag is almost invisible in Barcelona, while the Catalonian flag flies from balconies everywhere. However, recent internal fracturing of the movement has slowed down the momentum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><img class=\"size-medium wp-image-82072 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/catalunya-28524_960_720-300x193.png\" alt=\"d\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" \/>Artur Mas<\/strong>, who was\u00a0in power for only 3 months after leading the coalition <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Together_for_Yes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>Junts del Si<\/strong><\/a> (Together for Yes) to win the Catalonian presidency and claim a victory for the independence movement, was soon dethroned by radical left-wing group <strong>Popular Unity Candidacies<\/strong> (CUP) for his alleged support for a corrupt party.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Carles Puigdemont<\/strong>, Catalonia\u2019s current president of the <strong>Catalan Democratic Convergence<\/strong> (CDC) party was handed the reins by <strong>Mas<\/strong> on 9th January, and is considered as <strong>pro-independence<\/strong> as you can get, famously quoting a Catalan journalist executed under the Franco dictatorship \u201cthe invaders will be expelled from Catalonia\u201d in reference to the Spanish government.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yet the <strong><em>independentista<\/em> movement<\/strong> has limited time to propose a realistic plan, 18 months. Whether this is the moment to be changing their leader is questionable; if they cannot sustain alliances for two years, there is little confidence a stable government can result.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The secessionist movement traditionally had a civilised, progressive and communal reputation. Families, young and old, rich and poor, from Barcelona and villages alike, participated in the annual independence demonstration on September 11 without violence, angry voices or even littering. Apart from a markedly more radical and unpredictable turn, the separatists are accused by some of promoting an image of political righteousness, that the <strong>independence<\/strong> movement has a moral right to succeed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rajoy.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-64471\"><img class=\"wp-image-64471 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rajoy.jpg\" alt=\"rajoy\" width=\"328\" height=\"218\" \/><\/a>Regardless, the <strong>Catalonian government<\/strong> and the <strong><em>independistas<\/em><\/strong> have to wait for a Spanish government to be formed. The <strong>Popular Party<\/strong>\u2019s (PP) mandate ended in the recent election and <strong>Rajoy<\/strong> has since striven to form a coalition with either <strong>Ciudadanos,<\/strong> led by the charismatic and relatively youthful <strong>Alberto Rivera,<\/strong> or\u00a0<strong>PSOE<\/strong> led by <strong>Pablo Sanchez<\/strong>. <strong>Podemos,<\/strong> a new national party supporting <strong>independence,<\/strong> also holds some cards given their socialist image \u2013 leader <strong>Pablo Iglesias<\/strong> sports a ponytail and wears jeans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All four parties continue to look for ways to form a <strong>government<\/strong> that maximises their influence. However, the constitution holds no provision for secessionism and if a coalition of <strong>PP<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciudadanos-cs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>Ciudadanos<\/strong><\/a> is formed, chances are slim to none that it will be revised.
