{"id":60888,"date":"2015-12-29T19:45:19","date_gmt":"2015-12-29T18:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/?p=60888"},"modified":"2016-05-25T14:21:56","modified_gmt":"2016-05-25T12:21:56","slug":"sardana-a-traditional-catalan-dance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/sardana-a-traditional-catalan-dance\/","title":{"rendered":"Sardana, a traditional Catalan dance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you have ever stumbled upon a group of people dancing in circles in Barcelona, it is possible that you were observing the <strong>Sardana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Sardana<\/strong> is a style of dancing that is said to have originated around the sixteenth century, becoming a very popular dance in the areas of Garrotxa, Empord\u00e0 and Rosell\u00f3 in the nineteenth-century, when the modern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XhK0BIZoyac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>Sardana<\/strong> <\/a>choreography was developed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/3465654957_46cc7cedc5.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-60889\"><img class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-60889\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/3465654957_46cc7cedc5-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"sardana barcelona\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>The <strong>Sardana<\/strong> is part of Catalonia\u2019s festivities heritage catalogue, having been declared in 2010 as a festivity of national interest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Initially, the <strong>Sardana<\/strong> dance was performed to the sound of only one instrument, but today the <strong>Sardana<\/strong> music is performed by a <em>cobla<\/em>, a band with 10 wind instruments, double bass and a small drum, played by a total of 11 musicians. Some of the instruments used are the <em>tambor\u00ed, <\/em>the <em>tenora<\/em>, the <em>tible<\/em>, the <em>fiscorns<\/em>, the trumpets, a double bass and a trombone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Sardana<\/strong> is a valued part of the Catalan culture, being one of the many activities that was banned by Spanish dictator Franco in the 40s, due to his dislike of the Catalan, who he considered a threat.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Related articles:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/dance-classes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feel the rhythm: dance classes in Barcelona<\/a><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today, the <strong>Saradana<\/strong> is danced with pride, in very public places, so it can be appreciated by all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To dance the <strong>Sardana<\/strong>, people give hands, joining in a circle. Holding each other\u2019s hands, the dancers raise their arms, following the leader\u2019s indications for movements and timing. The greatest challenge of <strong>Sardana<\/strong> dancing, is getting the steps right, since most of the choreography happens from the waist down.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It would be wise to observe the dance for a while or even practice it at home, before joining a <strong>Sardana<\/strong> circle. The dance steps are so precise, that if one person takes a wrong step, it can break the rhythm for the entire circle!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">People of all ages and any sex can dance the <strong>Sardana<\/strong>, as long as they know how to do it.
