Born in October of 1881, in the region of Malaga, <strong>Picasso<\/strong> grew up to be one of the world\u2019s most famous painter and sculptor, co-founder of the Cubist movement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2084669164_a8ca6a61cb.jpg\"><img class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-59411\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2084669164_a8ca6a61cb-253x300.jpg\" alt=\"picasso barcelona\" width=\"253\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.museupicasso.bcn.cat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Picasso Museum<\/a><\/strong> occupies five large town houses, originally created between the thirteenth and fifteenth century, having undergone major refurbishments along the years, the most important of them during the eighteenth century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Picasso Museum<\/strong> first opened its doors in 1963, having expanded from using one single townhouse to the five it occupies today. The <strong>museum\u2019s<\/strong> collection is composed of 4.251 works, including pieces from the artist\u2019s formative years. The art pieces are displayed in the twenty-two rooms that form the <strong>museum.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>museum\u2019s<\/strong> collection started with the donation of the <strong><em>Harlequin<\/em><\/strong> in 1919. Thirteen years later, Barcelona\u2019s City Council and the Generalitat bought the Plandiura Collection, containing 22 works by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pablopicasso.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Picasso<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was Jaume Sabart\u00e9s, <strong>Picasso<\/strong>\u2019s friend and secretary that proposed the creation of a <strong>museum<\/strong> that would be solely dedicated to the artist\u2019s work. The proposal was accepted by the City Council, and the <strong>Museu Picasso<\/strong> was founded in Barcelona on July 27<sup>th<\/sup> of 1963.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Related article:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/catalonias-history-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catalonia\u2019s History Museum<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"Ticketbar-Widget\" data-widget-guid=\"68e0e681-6422-4bda-a342-c1571559dc44\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Sabart\u00e9s Collection<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>museum<\/strong> had to be opened originally under the name <strong>Sabart\u00e9s Collection<\/strong>, since <strong>Picasso<\/strong> was openly opposed to Franco\u2019s regime.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many were the artists and collectors that made the current <strong>museum<\/strong> collection possible. In 1963 Salvador Dal\u00ed donated <strong><em>Les Metamorphoses d\u2019Ovide<\/em><\/strong> (1931). In 1966, collector Sebasti\u00e0 Junyer Vidal donated 7 <strong>Picasso<\/strong> drawings created between 1899 and 1904. In 1968, <strong>Picasso<\/strong> himself donated the <strong><em>Blue Portrait of Sabart\u00e9s<\/em><\/strong> (1901) and the 58 canvases making up the <strong><em>Meninas<\/em><\/strong> series (1957). Years later, in 1970, the artist makes another donation of 921 works from his childhood and youth era, which calls for the <strong>museum\u2019s<\/strong> first expansion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\" wp-image-59412 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/5411039764_6628113cd8-291x300.jpg\" alt=\"picasso barcelona\" width=\"240\" height=\"247\" \/>Other significant donations came from Jacqueline Roque, the artist\u2019s wife, Louis Leiris Gallery, the Picasso-Revent\u00f3s Foundation, Lord Amulree, and Pablo Vilat\u00f3 Ruiz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Picasso Museum<\/strong> also receives exhibits by temporarily exchanging pieces from the <strong>museum\u2019s<\/strong> collection with pieces from other <strong>museums.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Picasso Museum<\/strong> is located at Carrer Montcada, 15-23, and is open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 9am to 7pm.
