But also there are plenty of hidden squares where you can while away some time. This is often referred to as the “Soho of Barcelona”.

Until the 1980’s this area of the city was avoided. Its alleyways were quite dingy and unwelcoming. But when Barcelona hosted the Olympics things changed. This is because entrepeneurs and tourists began to see what a wonderful place El Born could be. In fact it only took ashort while for this part of the city to become the trendiest.

But the heart of El Born is considered to be the most picturesque. One area particular favoured by residents and visitors alike is Passeig del Born. This used to be the site where jousting took place in Medieval times, but has now become the hub of the areas nightlife.

As you wander around this tree lined square (its oblong in shape really) there are numerous bars you can enjoy. Certainly in the evenings these become full of hip locals in their 20’s. They will spend their evenings enjoying cocktails and beer along with nibbling on a few tasty tapas.

Related article: Vila de Gràcia – Barrios of Barcelona

The heart of El Born

Photo via Pixabay

Throughout the summer months this area of the city comes to life. We are talking about the church (Santa Maria del Mar). It is easy to recognise because of the large rose shaped stain glassed window and the octagonal tower.

Below this is a beautiful little square where them are some beautiful little places to dine at al fresco. But as these cafes are so much in demand it can sometimes prove difficult to get a seat. But the wait will be worth it.
