Having originated in Valls, Alto Campo, in the province of Tarragona, the event soon expanded into the other provinces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>cal\u00e7ot<\/strong> is a green onion from Lleida, Catalonia. This type of onion is milder and less bulbous than the regular onion. The white part of the <strong>cal\u00e7ot<\/strong> can be 15cm to 25cm long, with a diameter between 1.7cm and 2.5cm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Paret_de_cal\u00e7ots.jpg\"><img class=\"size-medium wp-image-58577 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Paret_de_cal\u00e7ots-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"cal\u00e7ots cal\u00e7otada barcelona\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>The name \u201c<strong>cal\u00e7ot<\/strong>\u201d comes from the fact that the trunk of the plant is covered with dirt (\u201ccal\u00e7ar la terra sobre la planta\u201d) when being cultivated, in order to make it grow as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">No one knows exactly how<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3KrOXLwzRL8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"> <strong>cal\u00e7ots<\/strong> <\/a>came to be such a famous dish, but the most common version of the story is that the way it is prepared today was discovered by a peasant called Xat de Benaiges in the end of the nineteenth century. When roasting a <strong>cal\u00e7ot<\/strong>, Benaiges accidentally let it burn. The <strong>cal\u00e7ots<\/strong> are prepared directly over fire, in a barbeque grill. When the exterior layers have turned black, starting to open and let out some foam, they are removed from the grill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They <strong>cal\u00e7ots<\/strong> are gathered in groups of twenty five and wrapped in newspaper so they can finish cooking with their own heat. The <strong>cal\u00e7ots<\/strong>\u00a0are usually left inside de newspaper for about half an hour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To eat a <strong>cal\u00e7ot<\/strong>, people sometimes use a big bib that can go as far as their knees.
